Makes My Monday: Pleasant Surprises

When I logged into my Fishful Thinking Ambassador’s portal this morning, I saw two things that made me smile.

The first was my name on the list of winners for the week. (Who can’t use an extra $50 around the holidays??)

MMMFT(Please excuse the black-outs…personal information that’s not mine to share.)

And second was a Top Idea mark for my post on Saturday!

mmmTI

Not only does receiving accolades Make My Monday, but being a part of such a wonderful community does as well (probably even more so…)

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Head on over to see what else makes people’s Mondays (there are always some really good ones!)

Gorgeous

Just the other day I was thinking, “Hm. I haven’t seen many blog award posts in a while…were those just a fad? Has everyone been through them all?” And then…BAM! Debi from Who Says Eight is Enough gave me this cute award! Thanks Debi – it really means a lot to me πŸ™‚

Have you “met” Debi yet? She has about a million different blogs and has about a million different projects going on. She also has 9 kids! I’m not sure how she does it, except for that I’m pretty sure she doesn’t ever sleep…
GorgeousBloggerAwardThe Gorgeous Blogger Award

By accepting this award I am required to tell you six things about myself that you don’t know and then award it to six other gorgeous bloggers.

  1. I’m actually pretty shy, and never really feel like I belong when I go to new-ish places – even though I know I have every right to be there … like PTO meetings and church.
  2. I fell off my diet and have gained 5 pounds back. *sigh* And have zero motivation to get back into the swing of things.
  3. I’m constantly worried that I don’t pay enough attention to my kids…or that one of them gets more attention than the others…
  4. I can eat an entire bag of potato chips in one sitting.
  5. I’m torn between my love for our house and town and wanting to move closer to where I grew up.
  6. I’m a completeΒ  “home body”, but I miss the days of game nights out with friends.

And the 6 gorgeous bloggers:

  1. What a Card
  2. Cheryl at Twinfatuation
  3. Heather at Want What You Have
  4. Nicole at Sotoriffic Twins
  5. Nancy at Southern Blessings
  6. Laura at Catholic Teacher Musings

Still Sore

On Sunday, I was walking up the stairs to put Logan down for his nap. About 1/3 of the way up, he dropped a sticker and pointed to it…so I turned around to get it for him…and lost my balance. Logan and I tumbled down the stairs and landed on the appropriately-named landing. I believe I said “Oh!” as my (thankfully very cushioned) bum hit that bottom step.

Being a mom, I tried to shield Logan from any bumps…which I THINK I did…he may have squished a finger between my elbow and a step, but that’s it, and it wasn’t bad. I KNOW it scared him. Hell –Β  it scared me! (Nothing a little Elmo BooBoo couldn’t fix for him though.)

I’m not quite sure what I did to myself. I think I hit my elbow on the window sill …and then the upper part of the same arm on a step or two. (Some nice bruising there.) I have a few bruises on my bum, but nothing major. And I can’t tell if I hit my back or just wrenched it while twisting to get Logan out of the path of … well, me. I know my neck is tender because of the tensing up part…

Thank God nothing is broken – on either of us! I’ll take a little tenderness if it means that Logan was spared all of the pain.

What IS Today??

I swear, since I started working from home full time, I have absolutely no idea what day it is. I used to be able to remember what day it was from what was good on TV that night…now with the DVR, I don’t even need to do that!

Every morning I wake up and think “Okay…today is…?” And then I have to remember if it’s a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday so I can get the kids up and ready for school. And then throughout the day I’m constantly having to remind myself “Today is Monday – Speech class then Drawing class for Burke” Or “Today is Wednesday – Maggie has dance class today.” Or “Today is Thursday – EI day.” or “Today is Friday – EI day for a different kid.”

And I’m always skipping over Sunday for some reason. We’ll be sitting around on a Saturday and I’ll be thinking “Okay – tomorrow is Monday. I have to <fill in whatever happens on Mondays>” And Mike will gently remind me that we have a whole other day to plan around first.

Is part of the problem that I’m not really planning MY days any more? I have to remember all of the kid stuff, but none of mine? Seriously, *MY* day consists of get up, do whatever kid thing is going on, sit in front of the computer, perhaps another kid thing, sit in front of the computer, maybe another kid thing, sit in front of the computer, let the nanny go, try to remember what day it is so that I’ll know if Mike is teaching or coming home at his usual time. heh

Anybody have any tricks for knowing what day it is throughout the whole day? (And yes, I do have a calendar AND a planner…neither seem to help much though.)

The Blog Book Creation

A few of you have asked how I created my blog book. I first have to give credit to LauraC because I got this awesome idea from her.

I also have to apologize if it sounds a bit anal…I write documentation for a living, so that’s where it comes from πŸ™‚

Oh, and I had wonderful hopes that something like blurb.com would work well – but it really doesn’t. . . which is why I ended up doing this manually. And I know I’m going to forget some step that I did since I’m doing this from memory…but I’ll do my best!

Download a Template

I used Lulu.com. They have Word templates to download so that your page size and all of your margins are correct.

  1. Go to this page and scroll down to the bottom.
  2. Choose the size you want,Β  and click Download Zip File.
I just used one of the 8.5 x 11 ones.
Take note of the number of pages allowed for the size you choose.

Grab Your Posts

Once you have your template file, you need to get all of your posts into it. This is the time-consuming part…Since blogs are presented in the opposite order you’d want your book to be in, you need to work each post separately.

  1. Start with your first post. Copy the post part of it and paste that into your Word file.
  2. Copy the comments part – if you want those to be a part of your book – and paste those below.
Tip: This is for wordpress since the comments are presented separately from the post part. You may be able to copy the entire thing – including comments – in blogger or any other blogging site.
  3. Move on to your next post – over and over and over again.
Take note of the number of pages you have and compare that to the number of pages allowed. Keep in mind that page numbering will change a bit depending on how much cleanup you do.

Tip: I actually copied and pasted my tweets from Twitter as a last page or two in the book as well. (Just mine – and only the ones that weren’t replies.)

Clean the File Up

Once you have all of the posts you want in your Word file, it’s time for cleaning up. You can do as much or as little clean up as you want. It’s your book! πŸ™‚

The first thing I did was get rid of all of the links – it’s a book, you can’t click them, so I didn’t want them to be blue and underlined.

  1. Press Ctrl+A to select everything in the file.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+F9 to remove all links.

I then scrolled through the entire book to format it – looking for widows and orphans, looking for strange things around copied pictures, things that didn’t change from a link, etc. If entire posts didn’t fit on a page, but were *close* I’d mess with paragraph spacing, or remove extra paragraph markers or whatever…

I inserted MANY tables so that I could format things the way I wanted to. I used them to put captions beside pictures or to force two columns if I had long, skinny lists. Things like that.

Obviously, videos don’t translate well to paper books…when I ran across a post that had had a video in it, there was a huge empty space where it was supposed to go. I went back to the original post on my blog and used a screen capture tool to grab a picture of the still video and put that in the blank spot.

Publishing

Once you have your file all set, upload it!

Go to Lulu.com, click Start Book, and follow the instructions on the screen.

There is also a cover wizard part where you can upload a picture, choose the font for your title (and change the title if you want), and more.

I’m more than happy to answer any questions you might have – just let me know! πŸ™‚

Saturday Snapshot: Blog Book!

I’m published! Well…self published anyway πŸ˜‰

My Blog Book showed up in the mail today. 411 pages for the first year …starting in June. And I’m so happy with it!!

…now to start formatting this year’s…

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one too. Go over and have a look at what others are doing on this chilly Saturday.

30s

No…that’s not the temperature today (although it feels like it!)…I think this is the personal decade where you realize that things aren’t quite what they used to be

Little things like…having to pluck eyebrows a heck of a lot more than you used to. Seriously, I never had to pluck at all until my late 20s – and only a stray one here and there at that point. So not the case anymore! And dangit – they keep sneaking up on me.

Or…weight control. In High School I had quite the bod (even though I thought I was fat then…if only I could go back and smack myself!) in my 20s stuff started to slip. 30s? Forget about it. (Although I suspect a twin pregnancy and then a singleton one has a lot to do with that…)

And then there’s the big things…like OH MY GOD I HAVE 3 KIDS!!!!

Or…home ownership and marriage.

What really blows my mind though is when I stop to think about ‘personal decades’ of people “way back when” … Seriously…it had to start in their 20s (and earlier!!) for people back then. There’s no way I would have been prepared for all of this when I was in my 20s. Hell…I’m not sure I’m ready for it all now πŸ˜‰

Way Back When-esday

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Go on over to see who else is playing – and join in too!

Waaaaaaay back before yesterday, I had these two old things:

cimg0167

These two beauties (my birthday present from Mike!) were delivered yesterday afternoon…and have already gone through 4 loads of laundry. Woot!

cimg0310

The delivery guy mixed up the hot and cold hoses and my favorite wool socks are now a wee bit snug…but Mike swapped ’em back and hopefully I’ll get some new socks for Christmas! πŸ™‚

I think I’m in love…

Saturday Snapshot: New Moms of Twins Brunch

My Twins club had a brunch today for all of the new twin mom members. (No, I’m not a new twin mom, but I’m the membership chair…so it made sense for me to go πŸ™‚ )Β  Loads of fun!! πŸ™‚
