Scaring the Crap Outta My Kids

So, Halloween isn’t really a kid-friendly holiday, huh? I mean…let’s dress up and scare the crap out of them…after hyping them up with so much candy you can’t actually tell if they’re shaking from the sugar or because they’re freaked out. Nice.

We have some decorations up … and the typical shows the kids watch have been doing the Halloween themed stuff lately (ghosts, monsters, bats, etc). I didn’t *really* think anything of it until a few nights ago when Logan woke up – twice…literally shaking in his crib. Poor kid.

Apparently, I accidentally moved his clock just right so that it was casting new shadows (HIS shadows) on the wall … and it was totally freaking him out. I went in and he was pointing to the wall and shaking and crying. I felt so bad for him! I asked if he was scared, and with big tears in his eyes he nodded and said “Scared!” So I asked if he wanted to use the Monster Spray. He nodded. I turned to head out the door to get it and he totally freaked again…I had to take him with me to get the Monster Spray! That calmed him down for about 15 minutes – tops. . . when I had to go in again and spray one more time.

We ended up moving his night light (it hadn’t occurred to me at that point that it was his clock), and he slept through the rest of the night…but geez. Poor kid.

Fx4: New Dining Set

For all of my efforts with Fishful Thinking, I received a very nice gift card that made it so we could purchase a new dining room set! (I love Bob’s!)

Logan seems to like it…

Random Updates: Dancing, Grapes, Birds, and Fish

I have all these pictures and updates that relate to nothing but themselves, so I figured I’d just do one big post about them all. 🙂

Dancing
Remember last week? Marjorie wanted a skirt for dance class? Well, mom that I am…I couldn’t say “no”

CIMG0232

(Yes, she has crocks on…we’re still in the car here 🙂 )

Grapes
Remember the grapes we found in our back yard? They’re now ripe!

And Jessica – my nanny – peeled and seeded them and then had Marjorie help her bake a grape pie! Holy cow. It’s delicious!!

CIMG0234

(I also learned something…if your fruit pie looks like it will be runny, just add an egg and it will firm right up while cooking. Who knew??)

And a little story. Marjorie had a few blueberries in her hand and told Daddy that she wanted to make a blueberry pie. He kept telling her that we didn’t have enough blueberries for a pie, so she became thoughtful … apparently she remembered the bucket full of grapes we had picked earlier in the day and said, “Grape pie!” We’d never heard of grape pie before…

Birds
Remember Marjorie’s birdhouse? I finally got around to taking a picture of it hanging up.

Fish
Remember Fishful Thinking? Logan can’t wait to learn more fun activities either. 🙂

Re-Evaluation

Logan had his Early Intervention re-evaluation today. Ms. Speech had said she knew he’d qualify for the speech part again (barely) and he does. What’s always amazing to me is watching him do things at these evaluations that I had no idea he was capable of doing! (It always amazes me to hear all of the things I’m SUPPOSED to be doing with him at this age too…ooops!)

Anyway – he scored pretty high for his cognition (27 months), gross motor (29 months), and fine motor (31 months!) skills. His social emotional skills are right on track and his self care and receptive language are both about a month behind.  (Self care only because this test was created in the 70’s and they expect kids to be potty trained by 2. Are ya kidding me??)

Some of the things they asked if he was doing that surprised me:

  • drinking from a cup (non-sippy)
  • walking along a balance beam (or curb)
  • taking a wrapper off something (or a banana peel)

Some of the questions they only ask to see if he’s more advanced than he’s supposed to be. But those 3 … we’ve never really even tried. At least, *I* haven’t tried them with him. And uhm, we still give Burke and Marjorie cups with tops LOL

Some of the things he can do that surprised me:

  • match colors together
  • match shapes together
  • point to objects on command that I wasn’t even aware he knew existed

Some of the things he can do that surprised the evaluators:

  • stack blocks 7 high
  • hold a crayon the “right” way
  • not only draw a circle on command – but trace the one already there
  • put a 3 piece puzzle of a person together – 3 cards with head, body, and legs.

Go Logan 🙂

Found a Peanut

Logan had his 2 year appointment on Tuesday. Apparently, he’s STILL a little peanut.

The stats
Height: 32.5 in
Weight: 24 lbs
Head Circumference: 49 cm

Dr. Doctor actually re-measured him because she was worried about his height – well, lack-thereof. (And he actually gained 3/4 of an inch when she did.) Apparently he’s hugging the 10th percentile. Which wouldn’t be so bad, but  he was in the 25th percentile at his last appointment, so that means he’s not growing as much as he should be. Dr. Doctor isn’t THAT worried yet – she knows that mommy and daddy aren’t exactly tall – but she doesn’t want to wait until he turns 3 to recheck him. So we’ll go back to have him measured (and weighed, just cuz) in 6 months. He’s only gained 3 pounds in 6 months. I’m not sure what he was supposed to gain, but apparently it was supposed to be more than that!

So…he doesn’t look that little to me. Perhaps it’s because most of the kids I know are little peanuts themselves..? Burke and Marjorie certainly aren’t huge! And he’s just started to be picky about what he eats…but will really eat just about anything you put in front of him. I’ve decided that I’m not going to worry and that I’m happy Dr. Doctor is being pro-active and attentive.

The poor little guy had 2 shots AND blood drawn. For the first shot he looked at it and said “Hey!!” (hehe) for the second one he grumbled a little and said “Bug Bite?” but was just fine. We had a little wait before the blood drawing (it’s on a different floor), so he’d forgotten about the “bug bites” by the time we got in there. He did cry when they stuck him…and he probably would have been fine if it had lasted only as long as a shot – but they took a vial … and he didn’t like that at all. BUT, by the time they put the band-aid on him, he was fine. And he actually took the band-aid off in the car because it was bugging him.

Way Back When-esday

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Go on over to see who else is playing – and join in too!

This is from 2 years ago tomorrow. Logan is 6 days old, Burke is 2.5 years old.

Birthday Celebrations

As you know, Logan turned 2 on Friday. We celebrated on Saturday with Nana, Grandpa, and Aunt Cathy.

Grandpa makes shaped cakes. (You may remember Tyrone from the twins’ birthday this year. Or Elmo and McQueen from years past…) And not only does he make them, he frosts them with the BEST icing ever. (powdered sugar frosting. YUM.) Logan’s very first shaped cake was none other than Mickey Mouse himself:

HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY LOGAN!!

My goodness. I can’t believe you’re TWO today!

You amaze me with things you do every day. You’re such a “Burke shadow” (which he loves). You want to do everything that he does. To the point where it seems you’re learning new things too quickly! 🙂

You’re communicating your wants and needs much more clearly now. You still don’t have all of the words and sounds that you’re supposed to – but we’re working on it! And holy improvements in just the past few months alone.

You look like such a little kid now. No more babies in THIS family. That’s for sure.

I can’t wait to see what the next year brings 🙂

We love you!!!
