Giveaway: 9Lives Cat Food and Cat Toys

I received a very nice cat care package from 9Lives and MyBlogSpark. Since my 2 cats are about 15 years old, I wasn’t sure how they’d react to the new toys. And we’ve been pretty hesitant lately to mix up their food … since they’re already smelling like those funky old uncle cats they are. But I figured we’d give it a try – they can’t smell any worse, and perhaps the 9Lives would make it better. 🙂

The package included a small back of 9Lives Advanced Nutrient System Daily Essentials dry cat food, a scoop/clip, a magnetic picture frame, and 4 cat toys: a squeaky/bouncy mouse, a suction cup spring ball, and two crinkle balls.

I shouldn’t have worried about the cats. They’re cats and they love cat food. We use those mondo cat food holders that are actually meant for weekend (or week-long) get-aways, so the scoop isn’t that helpful for us, but the clip part is pretty cool (and I can see the scoop being useful if you feed your cat once or twice a day). Both cats LOVE the squeaky mouse (so much so that it’s actually already not squeaking – which is just fine with me!!) The other toys…sniffed, but not really attacked like they do with the mouse. (Although, this could also be due to age rather than interest LOL!)

Some feline nutritional information from 9Lives:

A survey of feline pet parents across the country commissioned by 9Lives found that an overwhelming 94 percent of cat owners are confident they feed their felines the most nutritious meals possible. However, nearly half (48 percent) admit they’ve fed their cats table scraps – which do not provide the essential nutrients cats need – an average seven times per month. Remember Rainbow Brite?

I remember Rainbow Brite from when I was a kid. I don’t remember a lot about her buddies, but I remember she had a kick butt horse. 🙂

See what she used to look like…Cupie doll cute 😉

…she’s baaaack! (Can you believe she’s 25??) She looks a lot different now…more modern…and I love it! It’s kind of neat that I can “pass along” one of my memories to my kids.

MomSelect sent me a CD to review with my kids, and a few extras to share (I gave one to the kids’ preschool and others out as Valentines Day gifts to Maggie’s dance class). I even have one that I’ll give away to one lucky reader! (More about that below…)

The CD I have includes:

A new Rainbow Brite animated short (there are a few more on the Rainbow Brite website too!)
Games, puzzles, and coloring pages
The Theme song (in sing-along style)
Meet Rainbow Brite and her friends

I put the CD in and both Burke and Maggie were immediately drawn to my computer screen. The music is “kid-catchy” …meaning, kids love it and adults can stand it once or twice 😉

Their favorite thing – besides watching the short show over and over – is the match game. Followed closely by the picture maker.

(As a matter of fact, Maggie is bugging me to finish up this post so she can play again…)

I like that I can print out coloring pages – that we put together – so we can continue the fun off-line. I also like that even though it seems “girly” there are definitely things for boys to enjoy as well. And I’ll admit that I had fun playing the Rainbow Rescue game *blush*

A Shining Star in the Crochet World

I love to crochet. Before I had kids, I crocheted almost as much as I read books. (Hard to do both at the same time though…) I tried knitting, but I guess my brain can only follow one hook (or needle) at a time. 🙂

The other day, I had about an hour to kill between getting a throat culture and picking up the kids from school, so I hit the local craft store for some yarn. I found what I was looking for almost immediately, including a pattern! 50 minutes left to kill, so I figured I’d buy a hook as well so I could go ahead and start on my blanket. (Since I’m always in the middle of about 20 different projects, and I like keeping the right size hook with said project, I can never have too many…) Except…all of the size I needed were GONE. In every brand on the rack! Grrr.

So I wandered around a bit looking at the end caps and a new hook caught my eye. THERE was the size I needed… only … it looks a little funny (and colorful!)

I picked it up and got excited…The Widget Crochet Lite has an acrylic (“normal”) hook, but it lights up! The handle has batteries and a switch…so it’s larger than normal, but it also has a “grippy” on it. And did I mention a light?? I can crochet in the DARK!!

Now, you’re thinking, “Why on Earth would you crochet in the dark??” right? I’ll tell you why… And it’s not just because my Great Granny Mac used to crochet at the movie theater (I still don’t know how she did that!) … it’s for all of those long trips we take to Vermont! I usually have to stop crocheting once I realize that I’ve been squinting for the past half hour and have to rip out the last row of stitches.

It’s PERFECT!! I used it on the way home one evening last week, and the light didn’t bother Mike while he was driving at all. Woot!

Oh – and an added (HUGE) bonus? Since the handle is about twice the size of a “normal” hook, my hand doesn’t cramp any more!! (Yes, I’m fully aware that I’m getting old. Shoosh. 😉 )

I think I’m in love. And I’m SO going back for more sizes.

Toy Review and Giveaway!

Yesterday, MyBlogSpark.com and Hasbro sent me 2 toys to review. (You can see Burke and Marjorie testing them out in yesterday’s post.)

The Elefun & Friends collection, which includes Elefun, Hungry Hungry Hippos, and Gator Golf, provides a great way for parents and their kids to enjoy silly, active playtime together.

We received SCATTERPILLAR SCRAMBLE and GIRAFFALAFF LIMBO. The kids started out with Scramble and then went to Limbo and then came back to Scramble. Both games are for kids 4 years old and up.

In SCATTERPILLAR SCRAMBLE kids do their best to balance marbles in the hands of one very wiggly caterpillar. Kids have fun dancing along to the music with Scatterpillar in this fast-paced marble game. The first player to securely place all 8 marbles in Scatterpillar’s hands wins. SCATTERPILLAR SCRAMBLE was named the 2009 Preschool Game of the Year by Creative Child Magazine.

Burke and Marjorie started out with this one…and quickly got frustrated because the Scatterpillar moves so much. However, they did come back to it when we talked about how it takes practice and that if they kept at it they’d be able to do the game in no time. I think part of their frustration was that the marbles would get away from them. Mike fixed this by putting the Scatterpillar in a box top – no more runaway marbles!

As the kids practiced, they actually got pretty good at it. They never really played the game, but they had fun putting marbles in Scatterpillar’s hands.

I liked this game because it teaches kid persistence and hand-eye coordination. It’s also fun to watch the Scatterpillar dance around.

GIRAFFALAFF LIMBO is the crazy new game of “how low can you go?” Spin the dial to try one of the 6 limbo styles: classic limbo, crab walk, crawl, giraffe walk, bend forward or backward. The game’s built-in sound will play an encouraging song as preschoolers try not to bump into Giraffalaff. If he’s knocked over, he´ll roll on the floor in laughter. The player who passes under Giraffalaff at the lowest level wins.

This one makes me laugh. Every time you knock the giraffe off the poles, he laughs…and it’s infectious. And I like that it gets the kids up off their butts and active! I don’t quite understand why the giraffe is up-side-down (apart from, you know, gravity), and it makes the limbo-er have to go very low, but it’s for kids, so I suppose that’s okay. (You won’t catch ME trying to go under that thing though!)

Burke and Marjorie had fun running around and ducking under the giraffe, but didn’t quite get the “spin and do the funny walk” part of the game. We’re working on that. They were really digging the music though – and doing well taking turns walking under.
