PB (Pre-Blog) – Getting Rid of the Pacifiers

It’s a slow day, so I thought I’d write about something I know I would have written about had I been blogging when it happened 🙂 So – this is “Pre-Blog” or PB.

The twins relied on their pacifiers for WAY too long. We were good about not letting them have them at any time except bed time and in the car on long trips. But we were bad about breaking them of the habit at an early age. You see, we just rid them of the habit in May. Yup…almost 3.5 years old and still with the paci. *sigh* But – we did it! And here’s our story.

Since Logan was born, Mike’s been the one to put the twins to bed. We had so many changes in their poor lives that we were trying to do it gradually…Mike was really good to not mention it at night hoping they’d forget, and not give it to them for longer and longer…but they’re like elephants. They always remember 😛

One morning as I was getting them ready for the day, I happened to notice that Maggie’s paci had a hole in it. I told her that it had a hole so we had to throw it away because it wasn’t safe any more. And I made sure she was watching as I did it. Burke was watching too and said, very seriously to Maggie – with his paci in his mouth, “paciflower broken. Throw away.” tee hee paciflower – I love that!

Mean mommy snipped a hole in Burke’s during the day when he wasn’t looking. Ooooops! Now all paciflowers are broken. They asked about the pacis for about a week, but were pretty good when we reminded them that they were broken.

Perhaps another thing that will scar them for life? Or at least from when they’re finally able to read and stumble on this post….

We Have 3 Kids!

No. This isn’t news. I mean, we’ve known we were going to have 3 for oh, about a year and a half or so now (Logan IS 10 months old). And we always said we’d have 3 kids – even before we got married. But OH MY GOD! We have 3 kids!!!

I think I was just starting to get over the “When are their parents coming home?” aspect of the twins when we decided to try for a third. (I used to babysit a lot, so the parents ALWAYS came home…)

There are times when I’ll just be sitting there and it will hit me – wow. When did this happen? And who’s idea was it anyway? LOL

Bounce, Run, Jump, Bounce, run, Jump …

The twins had their first gym class today. WOW. I am so incredibly impressed with this place!! GymStreet USA seems to have thought of EVERYTHING. There’s a snack bar for parents who are waiting for their kids (with WiFi) that’s located pretty centrally with LOTS of windows to the surrounding rooms so you can watch your kids while sitting at one of the cafe tables. They have a day care room (cheap!) if you have another child and want to work out (hah). They have competent people who know how to handle a clingy child. Burke didn’t even screech when I handed him over! (And he had been clinging like an octopus since we walked in the door.) And it’s CLEAN.

I should probably mention here that the kids *LOVED* it. loved it loved it loved it. I don’t think Burke stopped smiling the whole time. heh He’d bounce from one place to another. Maggie’s red curls bouncing along with him or in front of him. They followed what they were supposed to be doing (mostly), and the instructors were pretty good about corralling them back in when they needed it (yep. that’d be MY kids who needed it the most…) Burke and Maggie may not have been the youngest – they probably were – but they were definitely the littlest! My little peanuts 🙂

Here they are on the balance beam:

Burke on the Balance Beam

My only complaint is that I had to take pictures through the window… I probably COULD have gone inside to snap some – but I was just too chicken *blush* Oh, and I guess I was too busy chatting away too…met a mom with 18 month old b/g twins who’s older daughter was in running around with Burke and Maggie.

Really? You want the ORANGE one??

This was Mike’s reaction when, after we test drove the black Kia Spectra, I announced that I liked the orange one better. Tee hee Yup – we are the proud new owners of a 2008 Kia Spectra! And yup, it’s orange. Not the construction truck kind of orange, but like a burnt or coppery kind of orange. Pretty 😀

Orange Kia

See? This is the stock photo from online:

(am I breaking copyright laws by ‘borrowing’ this picture??)

After one hiccup (damn check engine light came on in the car on my way in to get the inspection sticker this morning!!), it’s all good. The computer tracked it to low voltage…so even though they charged it up before I drove it away, apparently since it sat for so long on the lot, it was still low.

I can’t believe we got a new one. We test drove a used one last weekend…what a joke. They were asking as much for the P.O.S. used car (and I mean P.O.S.) as a new Kia Rio costs. So Mike did some research, as Mike does – he IS a scientist after all, and found that the Rio would be perfect for us. Our requirements were to find a “gas sipper” to get me to and from work, and so that I could leave the minivan with Mike to get the kids to school on Mondays. I called the Kia dealer we bought the minivan from and asked them what they could do for us. Turns out that they were having this incredible deal on the Spectra ($2000 off) plus, they give a discount for repeat customers. NICE!

Loving the car!!

Monster Spray

A very clever mom taught me about Monster Spray. (She’s also a good friend, a former co-worker, and an essential oil guru – don’t worry, Paula, I won’t mention any names 😉 )  She said that kids like to be in control – especially when they don’t feel like they have it – and one major time is when there are “monsters” around at night. Her solution? Monster spray! Let your child spray it herself and life will be good. (I’ll give Paula a little plug here…she wrote a book on essential oils: Seasons of Aromatherapy. Well. she’s written a few, but I know the monster spray is in this one.) Okay – back to my point. At one time, I made the monster spray from her book (before I had kids LOL), but we’re just using Febreeze now (Sorry Paula!)

It all started one night a few months ago when Maggie woke up crying and talking about how she was scared of the Cookie Monster. (Yes. The *cookie monster* – of all things!!) We got some “monster spray” out and that seemed to help a little. We doused one corner especially (I think she saw the laundry hamper and decided IT was the monster.)

We now spray before bed every night – everyone has to have at least one squirt if they’re in the room, including mommy and daddy. Figuring out how to make it so that beds, blankets, Dad, kids, etc. don’t get soaked is for another day…

On the subject of bad dreams, one other thing we do for Maggie is to make a big deal about how we must have put her pillow down on the wrong side… And then make a bigger deal (making sure she’s watching) out of turning it over to the “good dream” side. So far, this seems to help too. (I’ll thank my Mom for that idea – I remember her doing it for me 🙂 )

Any other bad dream breakers out there?

Perhaps it’s Time

…for a bigger swing!!

Too big

Burke decided to try out Logan’s swing. You KNOW you’re too big when you can reach all of the controls yourself. LOL

Steak with a Side of Hotdogs

Add some ribs and asparagus and you’ve got our dinner tonight. Yep. For real. Ask my family and they’ll know: Mike’s been grilling again! 🙂 The only thing missing in tonight’s fair was some sort of potato…and that’s just cuz we forgot LOL

Just had to brag, cuz it was GOO-OOD.

Stuck

Last night I was in the kitchen getting some dinner ready when I heard Logan’s pathetic cry. It’s not the “Burke is in my face, get him out cry” or any of the other usual cries, so I rush into the dining room to see what’s up…but can’t see him. Oh geeez – where did he scoot to now. I need to remember that he’s mobile now!

I hear the (semi) muffled cry again…low-and-behold, he’s under the kiddie table! Stuck. He crawled (well, scooted) under it, sat up, and couldn’t figure out how to get his little self back out. And he’s done it a few times since…and will probably do it again. Silly little guy 🙂

Cat Thumb

What, exactly, is Cat Thumb? you ask…well, it’s not really the opposite of Green thumb (that would be Black thumb because YOU are the one killing the plants). But it’s close. I actually don’t know if I have a green or black thumb, because my Cat Thumb keeps getting in the way.

I’m sad to say that I can’t keep a plant alive…because my cat keeps eating them!! This also means that all those times I receive flowers (HAH!! “all those times” …I crack myself up), I have to put them on the top of the fridge. But only for as long as Tiger doesn’t notice that they’re there…otherwise, up he goes to the top of the fridge for a snack. And yes – he can get up there. *sigh*

It’s pretty sad, actually. Maggie planted a sunflower seed (in a pot to take home) at church a few months ago, and it started to grow really fast! We were going to put it outside once it got big enough (and warm enough) to do so. Apparently, even though it was planted in a house of God, He didn’t really want it to grow because Tiger got to it before it got warm enough outside. It sat in our windowsill, sadly brown and broken, as we hoped it would miraculously get healthy. mmm hmmm. So far, it’s all good because Maggie, apparently, doesn’t remember a thing about it.

We now have two Aloe plants (given to the twins on Children’s Sunday at church – what is it with plants at church?) sitting on our second fridge down in the basement. There IS a window down there, but it’s a frosty one…so the Cat Thumb may contribute inadvertently to the Black thumb there.

The twins picked some really pretty yellow flowers from the back yard the other day. THOSE actually lasted for quite some time on the kitchen table before Tiger found them last night. They must not have been very smelly…

meme?

Uh, Thanks to goddessinprogress, I’ve been tagged and am now inclined to do a “meme” … since, embarrassingly enough, I’d never heard of meme, I had to look it up! I also looked at the person who tagged her and notice that goddess left one category out! For shame 😉 Anyway. Here goes!
