In honor of Halloween, I’m posting from the twins’ first one.

Last week’s picture showed how I fed the twins when they were itty bitty.

This week’s shows how I fed the twins when they were just itty.

Double Feeding

Double Feeding

This was taken in August of 2005. I couldn’t move the spoon from one mouth to the other fast enough. I was always amazed at the twin moms who used different bowls and spoons for each kid…mine wouldn’t have been patient enough to wait for me to put one set down to grab the other. Heck, they weren’t patient enough when I ran myself ragged getting the SAME spoon into each of their mouths πŸ˜‰

My Back Seat Driver

I have a little fellow in the back of my minivan who now understands what a red light means, what a green light means, and when I’m supposed to stop before hitting something. It’s actually quite cute.

Whenever I drive somewhere and Burke is in the car, he’s always on the lookout for something I may have missed. “Red light, Mommy!” “…Stop!”Β  (Apparently he thinks I should stop before I do…) He (semi) patiently waits for the green light and lets me know when it turns. “Green light, Mommy!” He follows the path of the road, “Turn, Mommy!” (for bends in the road) or “Uuuuup” (for a hill) and “Dooooown” (for the other side of the hill). And he knows which way I’m supposed to go, “Turn now, Mommy! That’s our house!”And “STOP! Don’t hit the car!” Or house, or fence, or whatever else is in front of me when I’m parking. (I’m sure this is all making me sound like a bad driver, but I’m really not… LOL)

What he hasn’t quite picked up yet is that I can’t just “Go Fast!” when he wants me to. There are a lot of “Burke, I can’t go faster than the car in front of me.” said on any given trip. But I have to admit, I’m usually smiling.

I wasn’t going to post this picture, but Mommy, Esq.’s HDYDI post gave me the courage. And, looking back on it, I’m sort of proud of myself now. πŸ™‚

Tandem

Tandem Nursing

It was March 1, 2005, and my entire family was visiting. I went into my bedroom to nurse the twins and got myself all set up. My sister comes in, stops short, and yells to her husband “Hey Jason! You gotta see this!” (she was quite impressed LOL) He came in and said “Hello, Nancy’s breasts.” And then went out to get the camera. (My sister is the one who took the picture though…)

Seriously though, you can’t see anything πŸ˜›

Controlled Chaos

I took the kids to their first non-family birthday party yesterday. It was pretty much how I had envisioned it: controlled chaos. Lots of kids, lots of adults, lots of loud. They had a woman who came in to sing with the kids for about an hour. She was okay…no Laurie Berkner or anything, but she mostly captured the kids’ attention. Burke and Maggie hung out in the back with me (and a few other shy-types). They’d swing up to the front to grab a toy and come right back. (The lady’s props included stuffed frogs, stuffed fish, toy tools, little pumpkins, and lots of loud musical instruments.) And she encouraged throwing some of them. The kids had a good time with that πŸ™‚

It turned out that Mike was able to work in the morning and be back in time to watch Logan while I brought Burke and Maggie – but Gio, I have to say that you’re awesome for stepping up πŸ™‚

Some notes from the host that I’m going to keep in the back of my head if we ever attempt a non-family party:

  • Name tags. All of the kids were wearing one and it was a really great way for the adults to know who was who.
  • Home made banana cake. The kids *all* dug into it and it put the moms of peanut allergy kids at ease. Nice!
  • Don’t open the gifts while the kids are there. Ya – I was hoping she wouldn’t, and she didn’t. There was no jealousy over what the boy got, no sadness over having to give the gift up, no boredom having to sit through all that unwrapping. AND…it meant I didn’t have to worry that she’d give one piece of cake for my kids to share because they brought a joint gift. LOL

We had such beautiful weather yesterday, and my nanny went home sick, so I got to play out in the yard with the kids! I was lying on my stomach playing with Logan when someone took advantage of the situation. I managed to take a self portrait with my phone:

Wrong Kid??

Last night I actually got to bed early!! Like, 10:45 early. Woo hoo! (I guess that’s what a presidential debate will do for you…)

At what I thought was the wee hours of the night (but was actually only 11:45), I heard some coughing through the monitor – okay, lots of coughing. Two nights ago, this coughing was Burke and I had to wake him up to give him some meds. I hated to wake him up to give him the meds, but hey, a mom has to sleep too! So last night I just automatically assumed that it was Burke again. It SOUNDED like him…

Bleary eyed, I got up and got the meds, went into the twins’ room and again, woke Burke up just enough to shoot some meds into his mouth. . . at which time Maggie coughed. But only a little. With bleary head, I thought, “oh, she’s doing her typical ‘I see meds and I want some, so I’ll fake my little cough’ thing. Little drama queen!” And so went back into my room.

About 10 minutes later I hear more coughing…that sounds a lot less like Burke now. *sigh* Did I give the meds to the wrong kid??

Up again, more meds…go in and say “Maggie, I have medicine for you.” Her eyes pop open – as does her mouth. I shoot the meds into her mouth and hear “MMMM mmmm!” Eyes shut. LOL Perhaps I should try to get her into a Campbell’s Soup commercial…

Oh, The Drama!

When I picked the kids up from preschool last Friday I asked the usual questions. Among them is: “Did you have fun today?” Burke was his usual ‘yippie! School Rocks!’ self, but Maggie was quiet and just shook her head.

I tried to figure out what went on and asked, “Did you get into trouble, Maggie?” A nod yes. Oookay. “What happened? Did the teacher get upset with you?” She wouldn’t answer anything, but just looked at me – a very unhappy kid. I asked if she hurt someone. I got a nod at that. Oookay…”Did you hit someone?” nod. “Did you kick someone?” nod. “Did you bite someone?” nod. Clearly – she hadn’t really hurt anyone; and at around the second ‘did you’ I realized if she HAD hurt someone, the teacher would have mentioned something.

When I dropped the kids off at school today (Monday was a holiday), I asked, “Did Maggie get in trouble last week?” The teacher rolled her eyes and said “Well….” Apparently only 5 of the 15 kids helped pick up the toys on Friday … after having been asked 3 times and warned that they wouldn’t get a stamp on their hand if they didn’t help….and apparently 10 kids were *very* upset that they didn’t get that stamp. LOL If memory serves, Burke had a stamp on Friday! No wonder he is so protective of it – he won’t even let me hold that hand for fear of smudging it.

When I went to pick them up today, they’d all apparently done so well that they had a stamp on each hand AND a sticker! Nice. Go Mrs. Teacher! (As What a Card’s son calls her. heh)

My only complaint about those darn stamps is that now every stinkin’ sleeve (coats included) has BLUE smears on the cuff.

This is another one from just before the twins turned 2. They received a play kitchen for Christmas (actually, they received two – and love them both – still!). Burke was playing with it and happened to pull it away from the wall…so Maggie decided to peek around.

Peek-a-boo!

Peek-a-Boo!

And, like last time, I have the accompanying video. I think Burke is “playing” the doors along to some music we have playing in the background.

This and That

Birthday Stuff

Thank you everyone!! I kind of figured that I’d be staying, but didn’t want to assume. You guys rock.

And when we went shopping, the kids actually picked out one thing to give to the birthday boy – that was too expensive for one kid to give, so I guess this year (this party, at least) we’ll do the joint thing and then re-evaluate next time. Bia, I like the one gift with two separate parts idea! Hmm. Just got Lori’s comment…I sure hope that the mom doesn’t decide to give them just one piece of cake to share …because the gift is pretty cool (if I do say so myself.)

And I think I’d be more worried about keeping the kids “separate” with different identities if they were both boys or both girls, but I really don’t worry about that right now.

Hm. that reminds me, I still need to RSVP :”>

Bitter Sweet

What a Card loaned us her Firefly discs. I knew going in that I was setting myself up for heartache since the series only lasted one season (if that)…but I kept hearing about how great it was, so Mike and I watched them all. We got ready to watch what we thought was the final episode last night (4 discs with around 4 episodes each)…only to discover that the episode we watched the night BEFORE was the last one, and the last entry on this disc was the Special Features. (Probably would have helped if I had read the back cover, but I don’t like to spoil things!) The special features were cool too…and I guess it was good that we didn’t know that last episode was the last one until after the fact, but man. I wish this show were still on! (I blame Fox’s marketing…I’d never even HEARD of this show before.) I think I saw that there was a movie made…guess we’ll have to check that one out.

Oh – and if you’re wondering what the “sweet” part of this thought is – it’s that Mike and I can now go to bed at a decent hour instead of being sucked into watching another episode πŸ™‚

Man. It’s been a while again! Sorry!

Fx4:Thanks for all of the Big Crayon ideas! I had no idea that there were so many out there…I’ll have to take Burke (and Maggie) to A.C. Moore (Thanks, Rhonda).

Is It Just My House: Again, good to know that it’s not just me…What a Card – I had similar thoughts about the carbon monoxide detector, and also figured it’d be beeping bloody crazy if we were supposed to get out of the house ♦ Mommy, Esq. – while it sounds like your system might be wonderful in an actual emergency…how annoying when it’s not! wow. ♦ Jon, how did I know you were going to ask why it was on the bookshelf. πŸ™‚ I’m actually not sure why it’s there…perhaps we changed a battery and never put it back where it was supposed to be? I’ll ask Mike πŸ™‚ ♦ Debi, I know!! I have wondered that as well! It’s like when I have to be out of town, I always wonder if Mike will wake up if one of the kids is hollering, since I usually have to poke him.

Feeding Himself: Gio – I was actually surprised! Logan wasn’t that messy. I mean, his hands and face were … but I’ve definitely seen him MUCH messier – so clean up was a breeze πŸ™‚

You Know It’s One Of Those Days When…: Angela – yes. I do believe that means you need new undies πŸ™‚

The Ending Was Pretty Sweet Too: What a Card – I KNOW!! I totally feel like I’ve done something wrong when I “miss” a turn. Of course, I was doing it on purpose to see what would happen…but still!

Is It Just Me?: Just to clarify – anyone’s welcome at any time! My only stipulation is to call first to see if we’re home πŸ˜‰ ♦ Mop Mop and Pop Pop, I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the blog πŸ™‚ And I’m so happy that you left a comment! I had thought you were reading, but it’s good to KNOW that you are.Β  I hope you two continue to enjoy it πŸ™‚

I Blame the Cheese: Funny, Jon πŸ˜› ♦ Cat – Tonsils, huh? I’m going to have to check into that!! Maggie has a dental appointment in a month or so – I’ll see what they have to say too.

Year of the Potato: Lori – oooh mashed potatoes. I haven’t given those to the kids in a LONG time…great reminder, thanks! (I know – where IS my head??) ♦ Cheryl – Half baked. LOL! ♦ Bob – That’s it! I’m movin’ to Idaho! ♦ Jon – I know. I should probably give up my title, huh?
