First Birthday Party

It was bound to happen. I couldn’t hide them from it forever…and now that the twins are in preschool, they’ve been invited to their first non-family birthday party. And I have no idea what to do.

I suppose I should just go ahead and ask the mom who is throwing it, but I thought I’d ask you guys too *grin*

So…I’m thinking that a joint gift from the twins is okay..? As long as it’s a little bit more than if we sent just one kid to the party..? And speaking of that…what’s the acceptable/expected amount we’re SUPPOSED to spend on a gift?

And … at this age, am I expected to stay for the party, or just drop the kids off and bolt? (It’s at the boy’s house.) Do I offer to help? And if I offer to help, what happens if Mike has to work and I need to bring my 1 year old along as well – is that frowned upon?

How long do these things usually last?

Any other wise words of wisdom from all you seasoned moms out there?

I Blame the Cheese

Mac & Cheese, string cheese, American cheese, yogurt. (Okay, that’s not cheese, but I’m sure it contributes.)

My not-quite-4-year-old daughter has BAAAAD breath. She brushes her teeth twice a day – we help. I even brush her tongue. No dice. I don’t want this beautiful girl to go through life making everyone pass out around her along the way…any ideas?

This one is from when Maggie was not quite 2, and not quite talking. All the way back to 2006 😉

Every time I take Burke to his speech class at a local elementary school, he is fascinated by this huge red crayon out front. (It’s so big that I couldn’t get the top of it in the picture!)

It’s a Slippery Slope

Yup. I’m one step away from that whole soccer mom thing. *sigh*

I went to my first PTO meeting last night. (Why is it PTO in one town and PTA in another??) Anyway, it ranged from very organized to seemingly fairly disorganized. The women who run it have obviously been doing it for quite some time (they must have had older kids to go through the preschool as well). And one of the co-chairs (there are 4 or 5) was very good about recognizing that there were about 1/2 of us there who hadn’t been there before and had no idea what they were talking about for some things. Like…what a “calendar raffle” is. (And no, they aren’t raffling off calendars. Strange, huh?)

At one point they were chatting about whether we’d need another meeting or not, and how to communicate that so and so was calling this place to figure out that and no one else would need to, etc….so I asked if they thought a Yahoo Group might work well. Holy technology terror crossing some faces. But the nice mommy got pretty excited, and thought it was a great idea and is going to get my help to put it together. It’s funny because I was pretty sure I recognized her name, so when she said she belonged to another Yahoo Group, I said “Uhm, do you have twins..? Are you on the mom’s of twins yahoo group?” Her eyes got a little wide and she said, “Yes! I am!” So, I introduced myself and she recognized my name (I tend to, ah, post *a lot* over there…so my name is all over that group).

At this point, one of the OTHER co-chairs asked “Are you Burke and Maggie’s mom?” uhm…ut oh. “Yup! That’s me!” Apparently her son is in their class and talks about them all the time. (She was still smiling, so it must not have been too bad 😉 ) I guess the whole twin thing tickles him 🙂

So now I’m thinking…Why don’t my kids ever really talk about their friends? I mean, they talk about “friends” and playing with “friends” and seeing “friends” at school – but there aren’t a lot of names thrown around. Sure, they know names if I ask “Did you play with so-and-so today?” …but I don’t know the names of all the kids in their class. And when we were leaving one afternoon, they saw a playmate in his car and said “Say bye bye to Stanly*!”

Perhaps it’s just that they’re just as bad as I am about remembering names. Poor kids.

I’m actually not entirely sure when these were taken…probably a year and a half ago or so based on their surroundings. (Bad mommy.)

Way Back When-esday (on Thursday)

So, I’m a little late. Crazy day yesterday! Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one.

It’s a video this time. Maggie was just shy of turning 2 and is playing with a spinning top she got for Christmas.

This one’s dedicated to the various ways in which Maggie used to fall to sleep. She still starts out on the floor (or wherever), but has started to tuck herself in to her own bed after about 1/2 hour goes by.

Those Darn Monkeys

Burke was up a lot last night. Mike went in a few times (and actually ended up sleeping on the floor with Burke after he woke up for the 4th time), and I went in once. My conversation with Burke when I went in:

Burke: (running and jumping into my arms as I opened the door) Monkeys eat Burke’s Soup! (pause – then *gasp*) In the eye!

Me: (very sleepy at 4am – not sure I’m hearing right) Huh? Monkeys ate your soup and are in your eye??

Burke: Yes!!

Me: Uhm. Burke, did you have a bad dream?

Burke: Yeah.

We sprayed the monster spray to get rid of the bad dreams and he went back to sleep on the rocking chair (for about 1/2 hour – see above).

When I went back in to our bedroom, Mike asked if he was okay and I told him of our conversation. Apparently Burke mentioned the monkey poked him in the eye when Mike went in the time before…but Mike didn’t realize it was a dream LOL

On a totally unrelated note, when Burke woke up this morning we had the following conversation:

Burke: Friends over to Burke’s house.

Me: What friends, Burke?

Burke: School friends.

Me: Which school friend?

Burke: All friends!

Okay then.

Vultures: faemom – I usually hide out in my kitchen if it’s chocolate or something like that. I should have known better. ♦ What a Card – OMGosh! That’s the cutest thing EVER!! But OMG – I’m so not ready for that LOL! ♦ Amy and Rhonda – I know, right? The kids won’t eat what I put in front of them, but will totally mooch off of Daddy’s plate…even if it’s the same exact thing. oy. ♦ Silver – Geeez…I didn’t even THINK of that…perhaps this should be my new diet plan. Eat in front of the kids for ALL meals and snack and I’ll just starve to death 😀

Awww (again): Laura – I’m a tech writer. I have to follow the rules…it’s built in! heh Plus, I just copied and pasted from the person who passed it on to you *grin* (You just learned the secret to half of what I do all day at work LOL!)

BPS – Animal Kingdom: Cheryl – That telepathic twin parenting zone thing MUST be going on. 🙂

For the mommy meme I posted yesterday, I had my nanny take a bunch of pictures…this one didn’t make the cut because Maggie ran away at the last minute.
