Makes My Monday: Construction Dude

The picture wasn’t taken today…it was taken at Christmas…but my Dad was here for Burke and Maggie’s birthday over the weekend, so I grabbed a whole bunch of pictures off of his camera. And this picture of Logan TOTALLY makes my Monday 🙂

"You can't touch me, I'm union."

Birthday, Birthday, Birthday, Birthday, Birthday!

(They did turn 5…hence the 5 birthday’s up there. Although, there are 2 of them, so perhaps I should have done 10? 😉 )

We celebrated Burke and Maggie’s birthday yesterday. I still can’t believe I’m a mom to two 5 year olds. CRAZY!!

We had a blast! Grandpa, Nana, Aunt Meghan, and Aunt Cathy came over to help celebrate, and Grandpa brought one of his famous shaped cakes. (You may remember Mickey Mouse from Logan’s birthday in September, Tyrone from the twins’ birthday last year, or Elmo and McQueen from years past…)

This year, my dad made Cinderella!

Fx4: Theater Workshop

Burke and Maggie attended a theater workshop at the same place Burke normally has his art classes. They had so much fun!! Since it was 3 – 6 year olds, the teacher focused on getting the kids aware of their bodies. So they each got a turn pretending to be an animal while the rest of the class guessed what they were, then they played freeze dance (a favorite of Burke and Maggie’s!), then they got the dress-up box out and pretended to be different people (Burke was a butterfly and Maggie was a princess – surprise 😉 ), and then they made masks out of felt. All-in-all, a good time!

Having a Blast with Freeze Dance

I managed to get some of it on video, but I have to admit that I was chatting with the other moms and missed a bunch…

Breakfast

What do your kids typically eat for breakfast? Mine like pancakes, waffles, cinnamon toast, and French toast. No – I don’t make those every morning, but they do eat at least one of those each morning…gotta love Eggo 😉

So when I read about the benefits of cereal for kids, I was momentarily upset with myself that we’d gotten into the frozen-toasted breakfasts. Until I remembered that the kids eat cereal as a snack pretty much all day. Fruity Cheerios (known by Burke as Rainbow Cheerios – formerly known as All Colors Cheerios) are a favorite in our house. Gotta love Cheerios!!

I received the following information (and vouchers for 4 boxes of free cereal – woot!) from MyBlogSpark and General Mills.

Did you know that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source of key nutrients in children’s diets.

Other cereal benefits:

  • Ready-to-eat cereals, including pre-sweetened cereals, account for only 5% of sugar in children’s diets.
  • Ready-to-eat cereal is the No. 1 source of whole grains in a child’s diet today.
  • More frequent cereal eaters tend to have healthier body weights and lower Body Mass Index measures.

Studies also demonstrate the benefits of eating breakfast. A 1998 study showed that children who eat breakfast tend to perform better at school. Compared to children who skip breakfast, children who eat breakfast score higher on tests, are less likely to miss class or be tardy, have fewer reported discipline problems, and make fewer trips to the office.

For more information about kids and cereals, visit Cereal Health and Wellness.

Did you know that General Mills announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving? They’ve already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain.

Pretty cool, right?

Even better? A coupon for $1 off cereal from MyBlogSpark and General Mills.

Way Back When-esday

Since Burke and Maggie turn *5* on Saturday (I can’t believe it!), I thought I’d take this chance to post a few pictures from their 1st birthday.

Maggie: Where's the Cake?

Burke: Sugar High!

Is It Just Me?

I’ve had this post formulating in my head for a few days now, and nearly fell off my chair last night when I watched The Big Bang Theory and realized that this may be just me … and Sheldon!

Since I have kids (and a husband who snores like a banshee), I’m often woken up in the middle of the night. When that happens, I lie there and try to convince myself that I don’t have to get up and pee….trying to not think about the sips of water I’ve had before bed. But as soon as the word “pee” materializes in my head it’s over. I can try to convince myself that it’s ridiculous – I just used the bathroom an hour ago, or even just 20 minutes ago (yes, sometimes just 20, shoosh)…but it doesn’t matter. If I don’t get up and use the bathroom, I’m just awake for the next half hour playing games in my head about how I don’t have to go…and then I have to get up anyway.

And forget about it if I actually have to get up to see to one of the kids! As soon as my feet hit the floor it’s like a signal to my bladder. Again, even if I’ve just gone 20 minutes before!! If I’ve fallen to sleep between – it’s over.

Anyone else…?

Makes My Monday: Names and Tails

Names

For a long time, if you’d ask Logan what his name was, he’d point to himself and say “ME!!” And while, technically…that’s not wrong…it totally made my day when he figured out that his name is, in fact, Logan. (Which, when I stop to think about it, he always knew…because he’d turn and say “what?” when you’d call his name. Curious.)

(17 seconds)

The  thing saying his name to him is his Leapfrog Tag Jr…and I’m not sure why he’s got his finger in his mouth the whole time…

(And a picture to match the video)

"Hi there, Logan!"

Tails

Maggie requested piggie tails today!! She normally doesn’t want me to do anything with her hair (not that I’m any good at it…), or we just run out of time for anything more than a headband after it’s been brushed. But today – when we actually had time – she asked for pig tails 🙂

Logan’s name and Maggie’s request totally Make My Monday!

Baby Picture Sundays

Well. Today’s theme is supposed to be Good Hair Gone Bad…but since I can’t seem to get my act together to find the pictures that came to mind, I’ll twist this one around slightly 😉

I realized that I hadn’t posted any pictures of the kids sleeping in their new beds! And uhm…bed head is bad hair, right? *grin*
