Saturday Snapshot: Love Notes

Maggie came home the other day and told me that she was going to be marrying her boyfriend, Charlie, and I’m invited – so I should start looking for my invitation.

She even asked Nanny C. for her address so she could send off an invitation to her too.

Today she got out all of her girly heart stickers and started writing a note…and asked me how to spell Charlie. She says they love each other very much (and even sat beside each other *two* times in a row!)

If I can get past the horror of “OMG, they’re too young for all of this!!” and fixate on the “I wonder what this all *really* means to her”…it’s actually pretty cute.

I’m not so sure I’m ready for the requested playdate though!!

Friday’s Fotos: Home Improvements

We had an electrician come in this week to make some minor updates: light switch for the downstairs bathroom, second outlet on the porch, and hook the lights by the mantel up to the switch by the door.

He was also there to do two bigger things: move the thermostat, and install vanity lights in the bathroom.

We moved the thermostat from the living room (where the pellet stove is) to the master bedroom/office (where I freeze all day). We shut off the radiators downstairs…we’ll see if that works 🙂

And the vanity lights – oh my! I’m having a love/hate relationship with them 🙂 On one hand – it’s SO NICE to actually see my face in the mirror. On the other hand – My oh my the gray hair I’m now seeing!!

Recipe: Chicken Broccoli Braid

This is one of my most favorite Pampered Chef recipes (this, and the Touch Down Taco Dip…yum!)

It’s also the first meal I made for Mike…and look how that turned out! *grin*

It looks really fancy, but it’s super easy…and really tasty.
(But probably not all that good for you, so don’t make it TOO often!)

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups cooked chicken, chopped
  • 1 cup broccoli, chopped
  • 1/2 cup red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed
  • 4 oz. (1cup) sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tsp. dill
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 2 pkgs. (8oz. each) refrigerated crescent rolls
  • 1 egg white, lightly beaten
  • (optional) 2 tbls. slivered almonds (I don’t use this)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375F.
  2. Mix all ingredients together except the rolls, egg white, and almonds.
  3. Unroll 1 package of crescent dough; do not separate. Arrange longest sides of dough across width of 12″ x 15″ rectangle baking stone. Repeat with remaining package of dough.
  4. Roll dough to seal perforations.
  5. Spread filling evenly over middle of dough.
  6. On longest sides of baking stone, cut dough into strips 1 1/2 inches apart, starting from the filling.
  7. To braid, lift strips of dough across mixture to meet in center, twisting each strip on turn. Continue twisting strips to form a braid. Tuck ends under to seal at end of braid.

  8. Brush egg white over dough.
  9. Sprinkle with almonds.
  10. Bake 25-28 minutes or until deep golden brown.

The Mean Dance

Logan rediscovered the dancing Halloween Snoopy the other day and has decided that he likes doing his “mean” dance to it. (I can’t stop laughing at with him…)

(38 seconds)

This is also one of his bedtime stalling rituals now 😉

And the pictures to go with the video:

Makes My Monday: Feeling Sappy

I’m not one for Valentine’s Day. I think it’s a crappy holiday designed to put undo pressure on a lot of couples and undo sadness on those who aren’t in a couple but want to be.

I like the idea of celebrating your loved one (or loved ones if you include your kids in the celebration); but shouldn’t you be celebrating your loved one every day? I’m not saying go out and get a card or buy candy and flowers for your loved ones every day – but definitely make them feel loved every day!!

Alright, now that I sound like the Scrooge of Valentine’s Day…let me just say, that I can also sit back and reflect on what a wonderful guy I have. And how incredibly lucky I am to have found him! (And even more lucky that I haven’t scared him away yet 😉 )  And I’m glad to have a day to devote to him …and to let him know how I feel. (BUT – I still hope I make him feel like that every day…not just today.)

Happy Valentine’s Day, Mike! I love you – today and every day. 🙂

Where’d the Respect Go?

I *could* write about this with respect to my own kids, but I so don’t want to get into that right now…so that’s a whole other post 😉

Anyway, this stems from an observation at church today. When I was growing up, you didn’t leave church in the middle of the service. And if you had to, you waited for a break between things (like when the prayer ENDS!)

I’ve noticed that this doesn’t seem to happen anymore. People pop up and down whenever – during the sermon, readings, and even prayers! What’s up with that? Are people really A.) that oblivious to what’s going on around them, and B.) in that much of a hurry that they can’t sit through an entire service (or just can’t wait for a hymn or something??)

Do people just come and go from the theater now too..?

Saturday Snapshot: “Secret” Valentine Creations

Logan and Maggie snuck off into the kitchen to make secret Valentines Day creations 🙂

Friday’s Foto: Parent – Teacher Conferences

No, I didn’t take a picture while I was at the kids’ parent/teacher conferences 😉
I did take a picture of the paper Burke’s teacher gave to me though. *grin*

Much like the progress reports, there were no big surprises at the conferences. Both teachers are super nice and seem to really like having the kids in their classrooms. I love that both teachers “check in” with each other to see how the other child is doing – and to let Burke say “hi” to Maggie during school (or vice versa).

Maggie’s teacher, Mrs. S., mentioned that Maggie is a wee bit unorganized…which also translates into unorganized thoughts sometimes, and unorganized letters while trying to write. (Ya…like I said, no big surprises 😉 ). We heard very similar things from Miss Speech when Maggie was with her. As I have said before, we just need to figure out Maggie’s way of learning and support her in that way. Mrs. S. also mentioned that Maggie is super focused in circle time and is ready to get down to business. She stretches her words out quite nicely (for example, saying the sounds C – A – T), and can recognize what the word is when someone else stretches the word for her.

Burke’s teacher, Miss O., mentioned that Burke is getting better with the socializing, but she still has to remind him to go over and play with other kids now and again. He’s got all of the academic stuff down and is right where he should be. She noticed that he likes teaching things…so when she gets the chance, she lets him go with it. Apparently last week he taught the whole class how to draw a dolphin 🙂

Have I mentioned that I LOVE their teachers?

Anyway…the photos. Burke’s classwork from last week (front and back):

Actual written words:

My name is Burke. I am 6. yeers old. I like to eet peezza. I like to go to j on in wif my fans. My farit cur is rabo. I am BuDfl.

Translation: My name is Burke. I am 6 years old. I like to eat pizza. I like to go to Jump On In with my friends. My favorite color is rainbow. I am beautiful.

LOVE IT!!

Miss O. was telling me that where he had “eet” he originally at “et” …but knew THAT wasn’t right, so he puzzled over it for a while and then finally changed it to “eet.” When she asked him what he was thinking while writing it, he told her that “feet” sounded right, so eat must be “eet.” I know I’m his mom, but I think that’s brilliant *sheepish grin*

Oh, and the picture is Burke in the middle with brainstorming all around him. To the left is Burke drawing with an orange crayon. At the bottom is the “rabo” rainbow color he likes. To his right is pizza. And at the top is the entire family – including the dog, two cats, and the fish.
