Photo Shoot – Outside

I am *SO* happy with how Saturday’s photos turned out!! Anelise from {anelise} tupinis photography did SUCH a wonderful job (and was completely affordable).

I was going to put up all 108 photos, but I won’t do that to you…here are some of my favorites from the outside shots (SO hard to choose!!). I’ll put up some from the inside shots tomorrow.

Star Of The Week

Next week is Burke’s turn to be Star of the Week in his class. What a neat concept! For an entire week – it’s all about Burke. 🙂

They get homework this week to get ready for it:
Monday- Bring in the “All About Me” poster (partially pictured below)
Tuesday – Bring in 5 pictures of family and friends
Wednesday – Bring in your favorite stuffed animal
Thursday – Bring in your favorite book
Friday – Fill the estimation bag with items to estimate

The top part of the poster (not pictured) has his full name and:
I am 6 years old
My favorite color is Rainbow
My favorite animal is cat and dog
My favorite food is pasta bake

There’s a spot for a pictre of him and a spot for a picture of his family.

Then comes the fun stuff! It’s a fill-in-the-blank part (pictured).

Here are the words, I’ve underlined the blanks that Burke filled in.

Disney World is my favorite place
When I grow up, I want to be a swimmer
My favorite thing to do is color
If I had one wish, I would wish for everyone to be safe

LOVE this kid 🙂

Makes My Monday: Meeting the Mom of the “Groom-to-Be”

I’ve actually met her before, but not since Maggie announced that she was getting married to her son. 🙂

There was a book fair at school today, so all the parents go in to help their kids choose books. Since I had no idea what Charlie’s been telling his mom – if anything – I was curious to find out…so I asked if she’d heard about the up-coming nuptials.

She hadn’t heard about the invitations going out, but she has heard a lot about Maggie. (Good to know that they’re sort of on the same page LOL!) Apparently, on the way to Maggie’s birthday party, Charlie announced that Maggie was his girlfriend. His mom asked how he knew and he said, “Because she told me!” LOL!!

Comfy

I think Higgins is starting to feel at home 😉

Saturday Snapshot: I’m Ready For My Close-Up

When I took Burke and Maggie in for their 6 year appointment, Dr. Doctor mentioned more than once to get some professional shots done of them.

That happened today. Maggie was totally into it and wanted to be in every shot 😉

I’ll put the finished product up when we get them back 🙂

Friday’s Fotos: Musical Instruments

Last week, we made a slight investment so that our kids would be better prepared for their piano lessons:

We were originally going to go with a full sized upright piano…but after talking with my (music teacher) Step-Mother, we decided that getting a digital piano was the way to go. It is fairly easy to move, it doesn’t over-power the room, it never needs tuning, and it plays 50 songs! (LOL!) The kids are enjoying it and have actually been practicing 🙂

.

I also purchased an acoustic guitar for Mike (a late Christmas present!)

Unfortunately, as much as Mike loves playing the guitar, his wrist falls to sleep while he’s playing. Damn Carpal tunnel Syndrome!

Fishful Thinking: Present Parenting

Last night I had the pleasure to dial in to a Fishful Thinking call that Dr. Reivich was running. This call was all about how to be a “present parent” (no…not a gift-giving parent, but one who is actually THERE when you’re with your children).

Dr. Reivich states:

Among the factors that promote resilience in children, connectedness is central. The knowledge that one is understood, valued, and “on the radar” of a caring, adult is essential for healthy child development. Giving our time to our children, therefore, is a critical resilient building parenting practice: “Being with” needs to be valued as much as “doing with”.

One of the greatest barriers to a child’s sense of “togetherness” is their ability to know where Mom or Dad really is in any moment.  Thus, one critical goal for parents is to enhance our ability to be present in the moment.

That means you need to try to find a way to quiet the inner distractions; try to forget about that “to do” list that is never-ending and be fully THERE when you’re with your kids. Dr. Reivich said she tries to activate all of her senses – intentionally – so that she is really just BEING in the moment. Easier said than done, huh? I have a MAJOR problem with putting my phone down and just paying attention to my kids when I’m with them. I’m always checking my email and FB and other sites…

Luckily, Dr. Reivich has some activities to help out. (Below)

Another point that was talked about is that is even more important to be present as your children get older. And if you start while they’re young, it’ll feel more natural as they get older (that’s my take on it anyway).

One of the points that hit me hard was to stop trying to force being present when everyone is tired. Find your family flow and find a time that makes sense for you and your family – and then schedule time in. Also, keep in mind that things are going to take a little longer than normal – but that’s good! Take your time and be in the moment.

Activities

These activities are taken straight from a worksheet that we received as part of the call-in session. I can’t wait to try them!!

Awareness activity:

For a week, keep track of your energy, mood, and activities. In one hour blocks:

  • Rate your energy on a 1-5 scale:
    • 1 = exhausted, depleted and 5 = bring it on!
  • Rate your mood on a 1- 5 scale:
    • 1 = leave me alone, I’m in a horrible mood and 5 = feeling positive, happy
  • Identify patterns: Are you a morning person? Evening person? When do you feel happiest?
  • Focus your “presence” time with your child when you have energy and tend to be in a positive mood.

Family Flow Activity:

  1. Set goal to have 20 minutes with your child without distractions (phones, computer, television, etc.) Make sure you are in a physical space that limits distractions (kitchens are not a good spot, bedrooms are better).
  2. Ask your child to pick an activity that he or she enjoys and finds challenging (Sudoku, brain teasers, playing music, etc.)
  3. Every time you find yourself distracted by your thoughts, remind yourself that this time is a gift to your child and refocus on him or her.

“In the Tent” activity (good for young children):

  1. Make a tent with your child out of blankets, or sit under the dining room table.
  2. Post a sign on the outside of the tent/table that says “Don’t disturb until XX:XX (fill in time). The sign helps your child to know that you are all hers for this period of time.
  3. Climb inside/under with books, puzzles, crayons, paper, dolls, action figures – whatever your child most enjoys.
  4. Every time you find yourself distracted by your thoughts, remind yourself that this time is a gift to your child and refocus on him or her.

Way Back When-esday

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Go on over to see who else is playing – and join in too!

This was a favorite pass-time of Burke and Maggie’s … and it turned out well: Burke LOVED pushing, and Maggie LOVED riding. This picture was taken on March 11, 2006. The kids were just over a year old.

Is It Just Me?

I’ve known for a long time, but it was recently pointed out to me that I’m a … we’ll say, a bit picky when it comes to mac & cheese. You’d think that would mean I’d need the high-end, home made stuff. Nope. (Although, my step-mother does make a really good home made version!)

It has to be Kraft Mac & Cheese. And it has to be spirals Kraft Mac & Cheese. But does it stop there? No…it doesn’t. It has to be made with margarine (instead of butter). Weird, right? I mean, butter is *fantastic* in just about everything…except mac & cheese. And that’s really the only reason I keep margarine in the house *grin*

You’ve GOT To Be Kidding Me!!

The whole weekend was soooo nice. Spring was in the air – we had friends over for a BBQ…and then…then, Mother Nature decides to do THIS.
