Thank You!

Thank you to those who commented on Crooked Teeth and getting Logan fatter. We had Oatmeal and smooshed bananas for breakfast yesterday (he loved it!), and then some avocado for lunch. Wow – was THAT a success. I should have taken a picture though…he looked like a happy little baby Hulk LOL! There was green everywhere 🙂

The Countdown is on!

Our Staycation starts in 5 days!!! Now, we just need to plan it. *grin*

We decided that we need a vacation, but that we might as well take advantage of the things around here instead of spend all that gas money to go somewhere else. (We all sleep better in our own beds anyway.) Hence the Staycation!

Some things we’re thinking about:

  • taking the twins to see Wall-E
  • Beach visit
  • Commuter rail/train trip
  • Museum/zoo/aquarium
  • Petting/picking farm
  • Playground hopping
  • Lounge in the back yard at the kiddie pool!

We even get a Mike and Nancy day because Brenda (our nanny) is coming one of the days! WOO HOO!

Of course, most of this depends on weather, kid attitude, parent attitude, etc…

Anyone seen Wall-E? Any thoughts on taking 3.5 year old kids (who love Pixar films) to it? Anyone have any other great ideas for us to try out?

Help! I’m Standing and I Can’t Fall Down!

Yup – Logan’s at that stage. I was putting him to bed and did the typical leave-the-room-because-he’s-not-settling-down-while-I’m-there thing. He, of course, *loves* this (roll eyes here). I usually go back in after he’s cried a bit and worn himself out. Well tonight I went in and he’d pulled himself up and couldn’t figure out how to let go to sit back down. Ah the joy of stages 🙂 At least he’d gotten too tired to try it again (tonight)… 🙂

Thoughts on PB Posts

It occurs to me that you all aren’t in my head and may be wondering why I’m doing these PB (Pre-Blog) posts, and how I’m choosing topics.

The main reason is because I guess that I’m viewing this blog as a place for the kids to go and read about themselves when the time comes…so I want to capture some of the BIIIIG stuff that may have happened before I started blogging  (I was *so* not good at keeping a journal).

How I choose the PB topics is simple…something triggers the memory and I think “hey! I would have written about that if I was blogging at that point in time.” 🙂 For example, the post from earlier today about Maggie was triggered by the Crooked Teeth topic. (Bear with me here) Maggie’s teeth are a bit crooked now from her second hospital visit…but I couldn’t write about that one without first writing about her first visit. So…the second visit will probably show up in my next PB post.

Anyway – thought you might like my thought process 🙂 Perhaps not.

PB – Maggie’s First Hospital Visit

It’s another slow day, so I thought I’d write about another thing I know I would have written about had I been blogging when it happened 🙂 So – this is “Pre-Blog” or PB.

This happened last November…and even though I KNOW she’s okay, it still makes me a little sick to my stomach thinking about it. I’ve copied a lot from an email I wrote to my family about it. (Sorry if you’ve read it before!) And yes…that does read “first” visit … perhaps on another slow day I’ll write about the second visit. [Update: I wrote about the second visit!]

One night in November, Maggie was transported to the emergency room in an ambulance. She had a HUGE bruise on her forehead and probably an even bigger headache.

Around 5:00 or 5:30, she was running around in her socks on the hardwood floor…slipped and went down. As far as we can tell, she didn’t hit anything on the way down (although, she could have banged a chair or the pack-n-play). I went over to pick her up and started checking her out…didn’t see anything until I brushed her bangs away. The “lump” was sticking out about 2 inches off of her head! (And I’m not even exaggerating.) It was stretching her skin so much that it was splitting. I called for Mike and by the time he came up from the basement, Maggie threw up on me and passed out. Pretty scary. We called 911 and before Mike was even off the phone, the first responders were here (they ARE just down the street…)

Maggie was strapped to a backboard and went to the hospital with Mike. Logan (since he was only 2 months old and nursing ’round the clock) and I followed in the car. Burke and Aunt Cathy stayed home. Poor Cathy had to deal with a *very* distraught Burke “Gee! Truck!” over and over again until he fell to sleep. (Gee was Burke-speak for Maggie)

At the hospital as soon as they took Maggie off the backboard, she wanted to put her shoes and jacket on and GET OUT of there. (it was actually kind of cute.) But they wanted to keep her for an hour for observation. The swelling had already gone down considerably. About 1/2 hour into it, she threw up again…which meant they had to do a CT Scan. What a trooper. They wanted to wait until she fell to sleep because you can’t move during it. She did fall to sleep within about 5 minutes, but woke up when Mike carried her to the room. They told Mike to talk with her, but he couldn’t think of any stories or anything – so he explained to her how the CT Scan works. LOL Needless to say, the technician was surprised and impressed, and Maggie stayed still. CT Scan came back negative – thank God!

We brought her home and watched Cars for the rest of the night. She had some juice, but threw it up again. She woke up twice in the night, once because her juice was “missing” and she wanted it back to hold, and then again at about 5:00, I think because Burke was coughing. She asked for meds and then went right back to sleep.

The following morning she was singing the ABCs and doing fine. She even ate a muffin. She’d say “HURTS!” and point to her head – usually right around 1/2 hour before the meds were due again.

Here’s pictures of the battered…taken the morning after. She actually posed for some of them 😛

Crooked Teeth

Logan now has two (very crooked) teeth. They’re kind of in the shape of an up-side-down V. If you look closely, you can see:

Crooked Teeth

I’ve talked with the dentist who says not to worry until more teeth come in…but geeez, how can you not? I guess there could be worse things, and they ARE kind of cute…but can you say CHA CHING when the braces are needed 😉

On a related but not totally related note, Logan had his 10 month appointment today. He’s average in head circumference and height, but only in the 5th percentile for weight (only gained 2 pounds in 4 months). And here we thought that he was getting huge 😛 Time to pack on the pounds kiddo.  Anyone have any pound-packing, baby-friendly food ideas?

Daddy and His Kiddos

Debi did it again, and of course, I’m joining in again 🙂

Here are some of my favorite daddy and his kiddo photos. I know there are more, but I’ve changed laptops a few times, so here’s what I could find!

Yard With a View

Front Yard

The festivities in town are less than two miles away at the local high school. Therefore, Mike and I put the kids to bed, had some dinner and then stepped out onto our front steps to watch the fireworks. My (cool) camera has a “Fireworks” setting! This is the first time I’ve used it…not *the* best pictures, but the following were taken from our steps last night.

Back Yard

Mike took today off from work (WOO HOO!) and we played in the back yard pretty much all day with the kids. We hit church this morning (it’s just not the same with no one working in the nursery!!) and then came home to the pool and fun in the sun. A good day was had by all *grin*

Fun Food on the 4th

Mike Grilled up some *really* tasty stuff: Steak, ribs, hotdogs, kielbasa, potatoes, peppers, onions, and zucchini. And we made some corn as well. The pan fried version of it all was darn good last night too. On the 4th, we also had watermelon…Burke’s 1st piece was almost as big as him! 🙂 (yes, he had more than one…and then more for breakfast yesterday!!)

Maggie enjoyed it too.

Rained Out (or at Least On)

The town we moved to almost exactly a year ago is amazing! It’s such a family-oriented town – especially on the 4th. We have festivities the entire week! We have 2 nights of fireworks – a “family night” on the 3rd and then the whiz-bangers on the 5th … both of which we can see from our front yard. (So cool!) The local “mens clubs” (and others) have breakfast, lunch, and dinners available. And there’s a whole carnival that goes on where you can purchase a bracelett to go on the rides.  I can’t wait for the kids to get a little older so that we can really appreciate what there is to offer. Loving this community 🙂

Yesterday, Mike had to teach his lab, so when I got home from work I loaded Logan into the stroller and had Burke and Maggie help me push him up to the town Commons. As soon as we got outside I saw the BIIIIIIG black clouds looming overhead, but the forecast said that it wasn’t supposed to rain until late, so I ignored them (bad mommy!!)

We walked all the way up to the Commons (maybe 3 or 4 blocks? not too bad, but forever and a day with poky toddlers 😉 ), and started to hear the band playing oldies music about 1/2 way there. Burke started dance-walking … so mommy did too. Maggie was hopping along too.

We got there and listened to two songs…and then the lead singer came on to say that the police officers asked him to let the crowd know that there was a violent storm on its way and if you couldn’t get to your car to go into the high school gym across the street. Ya. . . 3 kids under 4 in a high school gym with one parent and about a million other people…not gonna happen! Plus, it was nearing bed time and I had no idea how long the rain would last. So we started home. Maggie was *so* not happy. Burke kept saying “It’s raining!” To which I’d say “Not yet! But it’s going to … Keep going!!”

And then the skies opened up. (I guess 6:30 is “late” in meteorology speak??) Logan was *so* not happy. His little sun screen wasn’t helping as the rain was coming in through the opening. I opened the umbrella and put it in front of him and he calmed down. Burke, Maggie, and I were soaked within minutes. Only a block or so to go! And then comes the thunder…and lighting. geeeeeeez. “Okay kiddos! Walk a little faster!! We’re almost there!” At least it was still pretty far away.

Burke’s still saying (over and over) “Raining! It’s Raining!” And Maggie’s wailing because she wants to go back and listen to the music LOL!

Maybe next year…
