My First Field Trip!

(As a mom-chaperone, anyway ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

I went with Maggie’s class to a local tavern-turned-museum. We got to ride the bus and everything! ๐Ÿ™‚

Maggie Playing a Colonial-Time Game

Spring Kindergarten Concerts

Burke and Maggie had their Spring Concerts yesterday. Holy super cute!! I’ll try to get my act together and post the video, but right now all I’ve got are photos ๐Ÿ™‚

Maggie

(Yes, she was that happy through the whole thing…but she did know all the words!)
.

Burke

(He did look happier, but I wasn’t able to get a clear shot…and he knew all the words too.)

Higgins 1; Burke 0

(oh, and Higgins 1; Fence 0 – the neighbors found Higgins in their yard this afternoon. I’m hoping that it’s because he found a weak spot…but I suspect he just bounded over. ACK!)

And THIS Makes My Tuesday

Burke came home today very proud of himself. And with good reason!

Right now, their school is running a program where the kids get a paw print (the mascot is a wildcat) when they are caught doing something nice. (I think there might be a bit more to it than that, but you get the idea.)

Burke earned his first paw print today for being the most polite kid in Kindergarten!

When I asked who gave it to him, this was what he told me:

Mrs. Milk Lady told Mrs. Assistant Teacher who told Ms. Teacher that I am the most polite kid in Kindergarten!

Yeah Burke!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Let Me Put My Surprised Face On

We’ve been talking up switching Maggie and Logan out so that Burke and Logan will be sharing a room and Maggie will have her own room. The first few times we brought it up, there were tears and no one wanted a change. Okay, no biggie – it just wasn’t time.

Recently, along with a trip to Jordan’s Furniture – just to look, we brought up the whole “Maggie into Logan’s room” thing again. THIS time, everyone’s on board (although, Burke is most definitely going to miss Maggie).

To make the switch more appealing, we’ve talked about a new bed and painting the (currently blue) room.ย  Wanna guessย  what color Maggie has in mind for her walls? Can you believe there’s actually a color called Princess Pink?! Ya. That’d be her choice. Luckily, it’s not Pepto-bismol pink, and even better – it’s just paint ๐Ÿ˜‰

Star Of The Week

Next week is Burke’s turn to be Star of the Week in his class. What a neat concept! For an entire week – it’s all about Burke. ๐Ÿ™‚

They get homework this week to get ready for it:
Monday- Bring in the “All About Me” poster (partially pictured below)
Tuesday – Bring in 5 pictures of family and friends
Wednesday – Bring in your favorite stuffed animal
Thursday – Bring in your favorite book
Friday – Fill the estimation bag with items to estimate

The top part of the poster (not pictured) has his full name and:
I am 6 years old
My favorite color is Rainbow
My favorite animal is cat and dog
My favorite food is pasta bake

There’s a spot for a pictre of him and a spot for a picture of his family.

Then comes the fun stuff! It’s a fill-in-the-blank part (pictured).

Here are the words, I’ve underlined the blanks that Burke filled in.

Disney World is my favorite place
When I grow up, I want to be a swimmer
My favorite thing to do is color
If I had one wish, I would wish for everyone to be safe

LOVE this kid ๐Ÿ™‚

Makes My Monday: Meeting the Mom of the “Groom-to-Be”

I’ve actually met her before, but not since Maggie announced that she was getting married to her son. ๐Ÿ™‚

There was a book fair at school today, so all the parents go in to help their kids choose books. Since I had no idea what Charlie’s been telling his mom – if anything – I was curious to find out…so I asked if she’d heard about the up-coming nuptials.

She hadn’t heard about the invitations going out, but she has heard a lot about Maggie. (Good to know that they’re sort of on the same page LOL!) Apparently, on the way to Maggie’s birthday party, Charlie announced that Maggie was his girlfriend. His mom asked how he knew and he said, “Because she told me!” LOL!!

Way Back When-esday

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Go on over to see who else is playing โ€“ and join in too!

This was a favorite pass-time of Burke and Maggie’s … and it turned out well: Burke LOVED pushing, and Maggie LOVED riding. This picture was taken on March 11, 2006. The kids were just over a year old.

Burke Pushing Maggie

Makes My Monday: Problem Solving

Last week Burke’s Art class started up again. He was really reluctant to go…and I had a hell of a time trying to figure out why – he LOVES this class.

After a lot of discussion, I *finally* got it out of him that he didn’t like being called “pizza man” by the class assistant (a super nice pre-teen with Downs Syndrome we’ll call Captain.) This was news to me because I’d seen interactions between Burke and Captain on numerous occasions and Burke has always seemed to really enjoy them. So…upon questioning a little more, I found out that one of the times Captain called Burke Pizza Man, it made all the other kids run after Burke. Ah…it all makes sense now.

So Burke and I chatted about things. And about how silly it would be if he didn’t go to the class and then found out that Captain wasn’t even there! And we chatted about what Burke might be able to do to let Captain know not to call him Pizza Man anymore. (Because, like me – I’m sure Captain thought Burke LIKED it – it usually brought about fits of giggles.)

I was finally able to get Burke to go by telling him that I’d chat with Ms. Art about it (and the promise of Burger King on the way home if he was good).

Fast forward to after class…I asked Burke how it went and he told me that Captain called him Pizza Man twice, but Burke chose to ignore it – and nothing happened. GO BURKE!! He was really proud of himself. (I was proud of him too!)

And this week? Burke looked forward to the class and had a great time. He even walked in and sat down right next to Captain. I think they’re best buddies again. And THAT Makes My Monday.

Friday’s Foto: Parent – Teacher Conferences

No, I didn’t take a picture while I was at the kids’ parent/teacher conferences ๐Ÿ˜‰
I did take a picture of the paper Burke’s teacher gave to me though. *grin*

Much like the progress reports, there were no big surprises at the conferences. Both teachers are super nice and seem to really like having the kids in their classrooms. I love that both teachers “check in” with each other to see how the other child is doing – and to let Burke say “hi” to Maggie during school (or vice versa).

Maggie’s teacher, Mrs. S., mentioned that Maggie is a wee bit unorganized…which also translates into unorganized thoughts sometimes, and unorganized letters while trying to write. (Ya…like I said, no big surprises ๐Ÿ˜‰ ). We heard very similar things from Miss Speech when Maggie was with her. As I have said before, we just need to figure out Maggie’s way of learning and support her in that way. Mrs. S. also mentioned that Maggie is super focused in circle time and is ready to get down to business. She stretches her words out quite nicely (for example, saying the sounds C – A – T), and can recognize what the word is when someone else stretches the word for her.

Burke’s teacher, Miss O., mentioned that Burke is getting better with the socializing, but she still has to remind him to go over and play with other kids now and again. He’s got all of the academic stuff down and is right where he should be. She noticed that he likes teaching things…so when she gets the chance, she lets him go with it. Apparently last week he taught the whole class how to draw a dolphin ๐Ÿ™‚

Have I mentioned that I LOVE their teachers?

Anyway…the photos. Burke’s classwork from last week (front and back):

Actual written words:

My name is Burke. I am 6. yeers old. I like to eet peezza. I like to go to j on in wif my fans. My farit cur is rabo. I am BuDfl.

Translation: My name is Burke. I am 6 years old. I like to eat pizza. I like to go to Jump On In with my friends. My favorite color is rainbow. I am beautiful.

LOVE IT!!

Miss O. was telling me that where he had “eet” he originally at “et” …but knew THAT wasn’t right, so he puzzled over it for a while and then finally changed it to “eet.” When she asked him what he was thinking while writing it, he told her that “feet” sounded right, so eat must be “eet.” I know I’m his mom, but I think that’s brilliant *sheepish grin*

Oh, and the picture is Burke in the middle with brainstorming all around him. To the left is Burke drawing with an orange crayon. At the bottom is the “rabo” rainbow color he likes. To his right is pizza. And at the top is the entire family – including the dog, two cats, and the fish.
