Burke has been practicing VERY hard at balancing this home-made shaker (made with Nanny Jessica) on his head. He’s even gotten good enough to walk across the room π
…he told me he wanted to be in a parade π

Do helicopter parents even know that they hover? I mean…what if *I’M* a helicopter mom? It’s not like my kids’ teachers would tell me…right?
I drop my kids off and pick them up from school. (There is no bus option at this age.) The school does offer a drive-up drop-off option where the teachers will come get your kids out of the car (and at pick-up they’ll bring your kids out to your car), but I prefer to take them in myself. I feel much more connected and like I actually know their teachers (and they know me – which I also think is important). There’s not a lot of individualized communication at this school – no parent/teacher conferences or anything like that. So…I go in, help the kids get settled, chat with a teacher or two – if they’re not too frazzled – and then go. When I go back in to pick the kids up, I sometimes get a quick update. For example, on Tuesday, Maggie didn’t want her picture taken with “Rudolph” at the Holiday party that day … which put her in a funk for the rest of the day. I’m not sure I would have known about that if I hadn’t gone in.
Next year, Burke and Maggie head to Kindergarten where they’ll have the option to take the bus. But I really don’t want them to do that (and luckily, Mike agrees). I think part of it stems from my own hatred of the bus when I was little – well…the 1/4 mile hike to get to the bus stop anyway. That and the fact that my Dad (and then my step-mother) drove us to school. I’m sure that part of it may be that I’m a complete control freak. Part of it is that in MA, there’s a law that kids have to be in booster seats until they’re 8 … are there boosters in buses??
The thing is, I know that I want my kids to have minds of their own (mostly π ) and be able to fight for their own grades and stuff when they get older. (There’s no way I’m going in to argue over grades for one of my kids!) And I want them to be able to make their own decisions – which includes making their own mistakes. I don’t want to “smooth out and mow down all obstacles” for them.
But I don’t want to not be there for them either.
I’m sure there’s a happy medium. I just hope I find it.

Cheryl over at Twinfatuation hosts this one. Go on over to see who else is playing β and join in too!
This was taken on December 9, 1005…I’m fairly certain that it was one of the first times Burke and Maggie saw – and “played” with – snow. π

There was a children’s pageant at our church yesterday. Since Maggie is the only one who will go to Sunday school – she was the only one in it! While Mike was at work, I took all 3 kids with me. Thank goodness I sat beside VP so I could sneak up and see that Maggie was okay in the front while leaving the boys with her. (She also took the following picture on my phone π Thanks VP!!) We didn’t make it through the whole thing, but we did get to see Maggie’s part.
Before the pageant, we hit Target and purchased a much-asked-for-after-Saturday-night Nutcracker. Maggie was dancing around with it this morning π
And lastly, Maggie was a big girl today and got her hair washed before getting it cut…except that she couldn’t stop giggling because it ticked. Which totally cracked me and Ms. Hairdresser up.
Who knew I’d be talking about Maggie for all of those? π All three, totally Make My Monday.

This week’s theme is: It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas. Fun!!
We did a whole bunch of Christmas things yesterday. First, we decorated the tree.
Then, Maggie and I got ready to go to a local-ish production of the Nutcracker. (Maggie’s first time!!) It wasn’t professional, but it wasn’t some mom-an-pop production either. (Only 4 ballerinas fell… π )
I asked Maggie at intermission if she wanted to go home or watch more. She DEFINITELY wanted more. (She wanted more when the show was over LOL!) She’s got a major cold though, so she was quite the trooper…especially as the show started at 6pm…close to bed time!
And … it turned out that one of my former Girl Scouts was in the production! She was pretty good too π
And what were the boys doing while we were off gallivanting? Putting the train together!
Debi hosts the Baby Picture Sundays. Hop on over there to see whoβs playing, and join in too!

When you have boys and girls, it’s really hard to explain that some things are not really considered “right” for the other – especially when it obviously brings so much joy.
Remember Maggie’s delight with the pink fingernail polish? Nanny Jessica brought some sparkly purple polish for the cause. (It’s super cute!) And as much as Burke was able to resist the pink nail polish, the sparkly polish was just too tempting. We compromised.
