Friday’s Foto Finish Fiesta

Candid Carrie sponsors this one – head over to her blog and find LOTS of links for bloggers who’ve joined in! (You can join in too!)

We had such beautiful weather yesterday, and my nanny went home sick, so I got to play out in the yard with the kids! I was lying on my stomach playing with Logan when someone took advantage of the situation. I managed to take a self portrait with my phone:

This and That

Birthday Stuff

Thank you everyone!! I kind of figured that I’d be staying, but didn’t want to assume. You guys rock.

And when we went shopping, the kids actually picked out one thing to give to the birthday boy – that was too expensive for one kid to give, so I guess this year (this party, at least) we’ll do the joint thing and then re-evaluate next time. Bia, I like the one gift with two separate parts idea! Hmm. Just got Lori’s comment…I sure hope that the mom doesn’t decide to give them just one piece of cake to share …because the gift is pretty cool (if I do say so myself.)

And I think I’d be more worried about keeping the kids “separate” with different identities if they were both boys or both girls, but I really don’t worry about that right now.

Hm. that reminds me, I still need to RSVP :”>

Bitter Sweet

What a Card loaned us her Firefly discs. I knew going in that I was setting myself up for heartache since the series only lasted one season (if that)…but I kept hearing about how great it was, so Mike and I watched them all. We got ready to watch what we thought was the final episode last night (4 discs with around 4 episodes each)…only to discover that the episode we watched the night BEFORE was the last one, and the last entry on this disc was the Special Features. (Probably would have helped if I had read the back cover, but I don’t like to spoil things!) The special features were cool too…and I guess it was good that we didn’t know that last episode was the last one until after the fact, but man. I wish this show were still on! (I blame Fox’s marketing…I’d never even HEARD of this show before.) I think I saw that there was a movie made…guess we’ll have to check that one out.

Oh – and if you’re wondering what the “sweet” part of this thought is – it’s that Mike and I can now go to bed at a decent hour instead of being sucked into watching another episode πŸ™‚

Man. It’s been a while again! Sorry!

Fx4:Thanks for all of the Big Crayon ideas! I had no idea that there were so many out there…I’ll have to take Burke (and Maggie) to A.C. Moore (Thanks, Rhonda).

Is It Just My House: Again, good to know that it’s not just me…What a Card – I had similar thoughts about the carbon monoxide detector, and also figured it’d be beeping bloody crazy if we were supposed to get out of the house ♦ Mommy, Esq. – while it sounds like your system might be wonderful in an actual emergency…how annoying when it’s not! wow. ♦ Jon, how did I know you were going to ask why it was on the bookshelf. πŸ™‚ I’m actually not sure why it’s there…perhaps we changed a battery and never put it back where it was supposed to be? I’ll ask Mike πŸ™‚ ♦ Debi, I know!! I have wondered that as well! It’s like when I have to be out of town, I always wonder if Mike will wake up if one of the kids is hollering, since I usually have to poke him.

Feeding Himself: Gio – I was actually surprised! Logan wasn’t that messy. I mean, his hands and face were … but I’ve definitely seen him MUCH messier – so clean up was a breeze πŸ™‚

You Know It’s One Of Those Days When…: Angela – yes. I do believe that means you need new undies πŸ™‚

The Ending Was Pretty Sweet Too: What a Card – I KNOW!! I totally feel like I’ve done something wrong when I “miss” a turn. Of course, I was doing it on purpose to see what would happen…but still!

Is It Just Me?: Just to clarify – anyone’s welcome at any time! My only stipulation is to call first to see if we’re home πŸ˜‰ ♦ Mop Mop and Pop Pop, I’m so glad that you’re enjoying the blog πŸ™‚ And I’m so happy that you left a comment! I had thought you were reading, but it’s good to KNOW that you are.Β  I hope you two continue to enjoy it πŸ™‚

I Blame the Cheese: Funny, Jon πŸ˜› ♦ Cat – Tonsils, huh? I’m going to have to check into that!! Maggie has a dental appointment in a month or so – I’ll see what they have to say too.

Year of the Potato: Lori – oooh mashed potatoes. I haven’t given those to the kids in a LONG time…great reminder, thanks! (I know – where IS my head??) ♦ Cheryl – Half baked. LOL! ♦ Bob – That’s it! I’m movin’ to Idaho! ♦ Jon – I know. I should probably give up my title, huh?

Is It Just Me?

I recently had this conversation with myself. (Don’t worry, it was all in my head.)

Me: I wonder why so-and-so hasn’t come over in a while.

Self: Have you invited so-and-so over lately?

Me: No, but they should know that it’s always an open invite to our house.

Self: Have you been there lately?

Me: No.

Self: Why not?

Me: I haven’t been invited.

ohhhhhhh.

The Ending Was Pretty Sweet Too

I had a really relaxing, wonderful birthday πŸ™‚

Mike had to work late (teaching his lab), which turned out to be okay because I was on the phone all night anyway. My best friend called this morning; my brother called this afternoon; my dad, step-mom, andΒ  not-quite-2-year-old nephew called and left a message while I was putting Logan to bed (they sang Happy Birthday to my voice mail…until Grey hung up on it πŸ˜‰ ); my younger sister (Grey’s mom) called on her way back to Vermont; my little sister left a message on MyFaceSpaceBook; my older sister called tonight; and my mom called too! *phew*

I had a cream cheese and jelly sandwich and a side of steak fries with vinegar. YUM! And didn’t feel guilty about not having a “real” meal … cuz it was just me *grin*

When Mike got home, he had me open a VERY cool present. A Garmin GPS!! I won’t get lost – ever again! WOO HOOOOO! Now, I just gotta figure out how to use all the cool stuff it does. Apparently, it’s an MP3 player and I can download audiobooks and a whole slew of other things. (It’s charging right now – otherwise, I’d be playing rather than blogging.)

I also had … more cake. And even shared some with Mike πŸ™‚

Thank you to everyone for your wonderful Birthday wishes – you all make me smile, and I’m glad to know you!!

A Great Way to Start the Day!

I woke up this morning to Mike trying to get the kids to sing Happy Birthday to me … being the morning kids that they are (I don’t know WHERE they get that πŸ˜‰ ), I got a few mumbles…but they actually did sing a little later on. πŸ™‚

And then when Brenda (the nanny) got here, she came bearing a cake! The kids sang Happy Birthday (again) and begged for cake. . . so we all ate cake for breakfast. And boy was it GOOD. Logan was in heaven. LOL

The best part? Now that they’re all hopped up on cake, I’m upstairs working (ah, blogging), while the hyper kids are all downstairs with Brenda! LOL

About a half hour after I came upstairs, Brenda came up to show me what Maggie had drawn:

M is for Mommy

M is for Mommy

Then I check my email and I see that Cat has left something for me on her blog! What fun!

It’s called Playing Tag with Memory Loss – perfect πŸ˜‰

The instructions are these:

* Go to your Sixth Picture Folder then pick your Sixth Picture.

* Pray that you remember the details.

* Tag 5 others.

Since I have been fairly good at moving my pictures to DVDs or Flash drives, I was a little worried that I wouldn’t have a sixth folder. Silly me, my procrastination paid off this time…I totally need to back my pictures up!! I was also worried that it might be a terrible, awful, playing with the camera, really bad hair day and still in my PJs picture that was the 6th one. Lucked out here πŸ˜‰ It’s also not a picture you’ve seen before!

Lgoans Baptism

Logan's Baptism Day

This was taken right before we left for church to get Logan Baptized (5.25.08). We were at my Dad’s house because we wanted him to be Baptized in the church I grew up in, Mike and I got married in, and the twins were Baptized in. Plus, we love the minister πŸ™‚Β  (He happens to be my Dad’s best friend, and my best friend’s Dad!)

“Oh, I Like Her!”

When I first moved to the Boston area about 8 or 9 years ago, I didn’t know anyone except my two sisters who were already here. I took a job – sight unseen – just to get me out of New Jersey and the messy breakup I’d gone through.

Before the aforementioned breakup, I made friends fairly easily, was considered a social butterfly, and was even called a “cruise ship director” by my family because I was the one to get everyone together. I was not this person any more; my self-confidence had pretty much been shattered.

When I started meeting new people, I was convinced that the one “bringing me along” just felt sorry for me, and that all the others were just being nice because their friend had brought me. Ya. It was that bad. There are times when I slip back into that person, but I’m much better than I was.

What turned it around, you ask? One moment that I will never forget – even though I’m ashamed to admit that I cannot remember who was involved, or if I’m even friendly with them any more. I was my usual tag-along with someone who ‘felt sorry for me’ and was chatting with this person and one of their friends. At one point in the conversation, the woman turned to her friend (my tagee) and said, so I could hear, “Oh, I like her!” I have no idea what we were talking about, what prompted the statement, or anything like that…but I will never forget those words or how they made me feel.

It also made me realize how few people use those words. Oh sure, you hear from your family that they love you – and that’s awesome – but it’s just not the same as someone liking you. Why is it so tough for us to let someone else know this? When’s the last time you heard it?

My challenge to you is this: the next time you meet someone new, and you actually find yourself liking them, TELL them. Heck, when’s the last time you told your best friends you liked them?

Is It Just My House?

I finally drifted off last night around midnight. Not great when I had struggled with a migraine all day, but at least I was sleeping!

And then, I was abruptly woken by a very high-pitched “BEEP!”

Quick check of the clock (1am), it’s not beeping. Quick check of my phone, it’s not beeping. Quick check of Mike’s phone, computer, anything on his dresser. Nope. Nope. Nope.

Okay – I hear it again – it’s out in the hall! Oh, there’s a smoke detector out there on the bookshelf, it must be running out of batteries. DAMN I hope this doesn’t wake the kids up!! (Side note: Mike’s still snoring…so he’s all good.)

I stand at the smoke detector waiting for the beep. “BEEP!” – not this one. It’s coming from downstairs.

Keep in mind that it’s *1 AM* here…I have major migraine meds in my system…and there’s a very high-pitched beep coming every 20 seconds or so that I cannot locate. What is it about that pitch??

I go grab that special battery smoke detectors (and nothing else) seem to need and the step ladder, and hunt for the damn beep. I stand under the one down in the hall. “BEEP!” Nope. Not this one. *sigh* But I’m closer!

Oh…there’s a carbon monoxide detector on the wall in the living room. I’ll stand there. “BEEP!” THAT’S IT!!! I open the battery compartment…CRAP! It takes AA batteries, not this stupid square one. Go rummage for those…please oh please oh please…woo hoo! There they are. Now where the heck did I put the cover? Okay, there it is…almost under the couch. How did THAT happen? All set.

As I’m walking up the stairs, it occurs to me that these things *never* run out of batteries during the day. Or when your head isn’t already splitting. Why is that??

I finally get my head down on the pillow for some much needed sleep (1:26am).Β  …is that Burke I hear? *sigh*

Apparently I’m a Rebel

Three Under Two and What a Card have both talked about the Top 100 most challenged books from 1990 to 2000. And I had to take a look for myself. Apparently, I’m a rebel, as I’ve read a few…

Here’s what I’ve read (my numbering system doesn’t match theirs…sorry!):

  1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
  2. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck
    (for school)
  3. Harry Potter (Series) by J.K. Rowling
  4. Forever by Judy Blume
(for real?? LOVED this – and all – Judy Blume books!)
  5. My Brother Sam is Dead by James Lincoln Collier and Christopher Collier
(for school. Liked it so much it prompted me to read their other one on the list.)
  6. Goosebumps (Series) by R.L. Stine
(conveniently located around my favorites, Christopher Pike and William Sleator…this guy actually sucks.)
  7. A Day No Pigs Would Die by Robert Newton Peck
(for school. Loved this one too – read more RNP books)
  8. The Great Gilly Hopkins by Katherine Paterson
  9. A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L’Engle
(Are you kidding me?? Both Mike and I agree this book blew our minds – and opened them – when we were young.)

(I remember being so moved by this one.)
  11. The Witches by Roald Dahl
  12. Blubber by Judy Blume
  13. Killing Mr. Griffin by Lois Duncan
(I’ve read all of her books. Are they upset because this one “offs” a teacher?? geez.)
  14. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
    (for school)
  15. Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George
    (remember liking this one…)
  16. What’s Happening to my Body? Book for Girls: A Growing-Up Guide for Parents & Daughters by Lynda Madaras

  21. Cujo by Stephen King
  22. James and the Giant Peach by Roald Dahl
  23. Are You There, God? It’s Me, Margaret by Judy Blume
(I just can’t get over how many Judy Blume books are on this list. And this one ROCKED.)
  24. The Face on the Milk Carton by Caroline Cooney
  25. Lord of the Flies by William Golding
  26. Where Did I Come From? by Peter Mayle
  27. Carrie by Stephen King
  28. Tiger Eyes by Judy Blume
  29. Family Secrets by Norma Klein

  31. Where’s Waldo? by Martin Hanford
(I seriously had to laugh at this one)

I was SUPPOSED to read these (shh…don’t tell my teachers):

  1. The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger
  2. To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
  3. Brave New World by Aldous Huxley

It’s a Slippery Slope

Yup. I’m one step away from that whole soccer mom thing. *sigh*

I went to my first PTO meeting last night. (Why is it PTO in one town and PTA in another??) Anyway, it ranged from very organized to seemingly fairly disorganized. The women who run it have obviously been doing it for quite some time (they must have had older kids to go through the preschool as well). And one of the co-chairs (there are 4 or 5) was very good about recognizing that there were about 1/2 of us there who hadn’t been there before and had no idea what they were talking about for some things. Like…what a “calendar raffle” is. (And no, they aren’t raffling off calendars. Strange, huh?)

At one point they were chatting about whether we’d need another meeting or not, and how to communicate that so and so was calling this place to figure out that and no one else would need to, etc….so I asked if they thought a Yahoo Group might work well. Holy technology terror crossing some faces. But the nice mommy got pretty excited, and thought it was a great idea and is going to get my help to put it together. It’s funny because I was pretty sure I recognized her name, so when she said she belonged to another Yahoo Group, I said “Uhm, do you have twins..? Are you on the mom’s of twins yahoo group?” Her eyes got a little wide and she said, “Yes! I am!” So, I introduced myself and she recognized my name (I tend to, ah, post *a lot* over there…so my name is all over that group).

At this point, one of the OTHER co-chairs asked “Are you Burke and Maggie’s mom?” uhm…ut oh. “Yup! That’s me!” Apparently her son is in their class and talks about them all the time. (She was still smiling, so it must not have been too bad πŸ˜‰ ) I guess the whole twin thing tickles him πŸ™‚

So now I’m thinking…Why don’t my kids ever really talk about their friends? I mean, they talk about “friends” and playing with “friends” and seeing “friends” at school – but there aren’t a lot of names thrown around. Sure, they know names if I ask “Did you play with so-and-so today?” …but I don’t know the names of all the kids in their class. And when we were leaving one afternoon, they saw a playmate in his car and said “Say bye bye to Stanly*!”

Perhaps it’s just that they’re just as bad as I am about remembering names. Poor kids.

* Name changed
