Friday’s Fotos: The Perfect Gift and Updated Style

My sister gave me the perfect mug for my birthday. I hold it proudly! ๐Ÿ™‚

And Maggie changed the fabric above her head on her bunk bed, so we now have room for more “style” on the wall.

Makes My Monday: Burke’s Perspective

Today was Burke’s second art class of the semester.

He was able to finish up a self portrait from the first class:

And then they worked on light boards today. Ms. Art had a horse figurine for the kids to draw using ordinary shapes. They first drew the shapes, and then using the light box, colored the shapes in on a different piece of paper.

She was tickled pink that Burke was the only one to turn the horse up-side-down and draw it that way.

Burke’s unique perspective totally Makes My Monday.

In honor of yesterday’s post, I dug up a picture from Burke was “reading” – you can see a super cuteย  video of it too. It’s from July of 2009.

Burke "Reading" - July of 2009

Guess Who’s Reading!

Burke brought his homework binder home for the long weekend (the first we’ve seen of it). One of the sheets had about 10 Rebus sentences on it (pictures in place of a word). I wish I had thought to take a picture of the paper, but it’s already back at school (perhaps I will when it comes home again).

To my surprise, Burke read every single sentence! Pointing to each word as he went along. The pictures, of course, helped. And there were colors in each sentence that had been underlined in the right color – I’m assuming during class.

The sentences were all something like:

  • My Shoe is Yellow.
Where Shoe is the picture and yellow is underlined with yellow crayon.
  • Is the bird red?
Where bird is the picture and red is underlined with red crayon.

The thought behind the Rebus work is that it helps kids learn the words around the pictures faster, with less frustration, so they’re excited to read and will continue to work on it.

I’m *so* impressed!!

This picture was taken on October 11, 2006. Maggie was not quite 2. As you can see…she already had a budding sense of style (I’m fairly certain that I wasn’t the one to put that headband on her…Headbands are still her number one go-to choice for hair in the morning.)

Tea Time!

The Proposal

No, not the movie. And nope, not Mike’s to me…

We’ve had quite a few in our family over the past few weeks though. I’ll be in the kitchen and I’ll hear Burke and Maggie in the other room talking about how to best make it so they can both pet the cat. And then I’ll hear Burke say something along the lines of: “Maggie, let’s get married – that way we can share Tiger!” Or we’ll be giving the kids a bath and I’ll hear Burke say, “Logan, let’s get married so we can share that toy.” Good to see he doesn’t discriminate ๐Ÿ˜‰ย  And I suppose I should be happy that we’re teaching them one aspect of a good marriage … it’s all about sharing. LOL!

It made me wonder if he asks everyone at school to marry him as well. And while I haven’t heard any stories about Burke, I did run into the mom of one of Maggie’s classmates at Open House the other night. Apparently Troy* came home the other day and said, “Mom! I have something to tell you!” …but then got shy and didn’t want to tell her right away. After a little while he came out with “Maggie asked me to marry her today!!” Now I have to wonder what toy he was playing with ๐Ÿ˜‰

When I got home, I mentioned to Maggie that I had me Troy’s mom. She calmly said, “Oh, I asked Troy to marry me. He said no.” And that was the end of that.

*Name changed.

In honor of yesterday’s first day back at school, today’s post is from the twins’ very first day of school from the past two years ๐Ÿ™‚

First Day of Kindergarten!

Today was Burke and Maggie’s first day of school – Kindergarten! They were so excited this morning…and I was fairly organized and had as much ready last night as I could, so this morning went fairly smoothly. (At least, as far as I know – I’m sure I’ll hear about something I forgot as soon as they get home!)

We decided that they’ll be trying out the hot lunches at school. We’ll see how that goes – but it’s definitely a lot less pressure on me to not have to worry about what they’re eating each day. I’m sure I’ll get a full report on the Chicken Patties that were on the menu today as well ๐Ÿ˜‰

We also decided that they’d be taking the bus (be still my heart), which – I think – was the most looked-forward-to part of the day. The bus showed up just before 8:30 today, but I suspect it will actually be sooner than that going forward…we were warned that the first week or so is quite varied because parents are taking pictures and such. (I know I did!) I thought about following the bus to school…but I just can’t be THAT mom. But I did sneak up the stairs after Maggie got on to see (you can’t even see their heads through the windows outside LOL!)…Burke had taken up a seat right beside another little boy and was deepย  in conversation. Yeah!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Makes My Monday: Air Hockey

At the birthday party yesterday, Burke discovered the joy of an air hockey table. (Not even knowing that both of his parents loved playing while at college…different colleges!)

On the way home, Burke asked if we could buy an air hockey table. My immediate thought was, “ya right, buddy.” …But then I remembered the table-top game I had, so I told him we already had one…IF I could find it.

We trekked down to the basement and there it was! Burke, Maggie, and Logan played too many games to count yesterday.

This morning, the first words out of Burke’s mouth when he woke up: “Who wants to play air hockey with me??” LOL!

Burke’s love of a game both his parents enjoyed way-back-when Makes My Monday.

In honor of my 1000th post yesterday, I’m using the very first picture I put up on my blog. It took me a few posts to get comfortable putting pictures of my kids up…and to remember to TAKE pictures. I’ve obviously gotten over both of those things ๐Ÿ˜‰
