Giveaway: Parfait Delights!

Sorry, this giveaway is now CLOSED.

“You know what ELSE everybody likes? Parfaits! Have you ever met a person, you say, ‘Let’s get some parfait,’ they say, ‘Hell no, I don’t like no parfait’?
Parfaits are delicious!” ~Donkey

MyBlogSpark and Yoplait sent me a Chocolate scented votive candle, an insulated tote an aromatherapy eye pillow, and a coupon for free Yoplait Parfaits.

I went out and got the Crème Caramel with my free coupon…and then noticed the Chocolate Raspberry, so I got those as well (*blush*). The Crème Caramel is fantastic. It’s almost too rich to eat (please note the almost 😉 ). If you’re a fan of caramel, I’d highly recommend checking these out.

(Fair warning: I had to chuck the candle…that fake chocolate smell turned my stomach a bit…and smells *nothing* like the parfaits themselves.)

Makes My Monday: An Apology

A playdate today gave me the chance to apologize to a mom and her daughter for not sending an invite them to go to Maggie’s birthday party. I was mortified when I realized that this girl – a good friend of Maggie’s – was left off MY list (not Maggie’s list – MINE).

Seeing the girls play together, and seeing that my blunder didn’t cost a friendship (either the girls’ or mine and the mom’s!), and having the chance to really say that I was sorry – face-to-face – totally Made My Monday.

(Did I take a picture?? Of course not. *sigh* )

Super Bowl Sunday…

I watch for the commercials. But I found that I’ve been so conditioned to ignore commercials (or fast forward through them – yeah DVR!) that I forgot to pay attention when they cam on!!

I wasn’t wowed by many this year…were you?

Saturday Snapshot: Happy Birthday Mike!!

Today is Mike’s 30-somethingth birthday.

We celebrated by going to the kids’ swim lessons, out to lunch at Chipotles, hitting the pet store, and then I made Mike’s favorite dinner: Spaghetti – his mom’s recipe.

Happy Birthday Honey!!

Yep, Same Sh!t, Different Day. Surprise! We got more snow this week (and yes, there’s more coming).

Fishful Thinking: Praise with a Purpose

Something I’ve been working on for a while now (ever since reading about it on the Fishful Thinking website when I first started with them) is praising the kids with a purpose. Sure, anyone can give an “Atta boy!” …but to really make a difference, you need to find something specific about that atta boy to praise.

For example, when Burke draws one of his pictures, I don’t just say “Great drawing, Burke! Awesome Job!” I try to say something like, “That’s a really cool drawing, Burke – I like the way you drew the horse from the bottom perspective rather than the top!”  I usually add in a “You worked really hard on that!” for good measure…especially when I know that he really did.

It’s hard to get going with this, but with some practice, it actually becomes habit.

Another good article to read is How Not to Talk to Your Kids. I think the Positive Praise and this article kind of go hand-in-hand. This one talks about how you may actually be causing your kids to under-perform if you keep telling them things like “You’re so smart!” (That’s where my “you worked really hard on that!” came from…)

Take note of the next time you’re praising your kid(s). Are you praising with a purpose? Are you giving them a complex? 😉 I’m sure I’m giving my kids some sort of complex, but I’m trying really hard to curb this one! 🙂

Happy National Ballerina Day!

Originally posted on February 2, 2009 (and 2010)

What? It’s Ground Hog Day?? Not in my family 🙂

For as long as I can remember, it’s been National Ballerina Day… 2/2 (tutu). You can imagine the celebrations on 2/2/02!

An example of an email from my Dad in 2001:

This is an automated response from your father.

Although most of the masses think today is “Ground Hog” day, we in the O’Daniel clan have been aware for years that this is really

“National Ballerina Day”

Those of us “in the know” can hardly contain our enthusiasm each year with the approach of 02/02.  Break out the noise makers and the rum punch.  Let your hair down and Twist Again with Chubby Checker!  Today is TuTu!

Those of you truly dedicated to the perpetuation of this sacred holiday should ALREADY be planning for next years MILLENNIUM Celebration.  Yes.. it only happens once every 1000 years.  You guessed it… TuTuTu!  Get ready NOW!  Don’t miss the opportunity of a lifetime… we will only see it once  02/02/02.  Or in the newest jargon  02.02.02!

Tu dot Tu dot Tu !!!!!!!

It’s coming……………….

Be Ready!

I can’t wait for 2/2/22

STREP 6, ZOO 1

Doesn’t add up, does it?

Strep has kicked our butts. Here’s the run-down:

Strep 2, Nancy 0
Strep 2, Logan 0
Strep 1, Maggie 0
Strep 1, Burke 0
Strep 0, Mike 1

Ya. Mike’s the only one who hasn’t had Strep in the Zoo. And Logan and I were both just re-diagnosed with it.

Wonder who’s next!

The Dog

Higgins was supposed to be snipped today…however, Mike’s morning routine included feeding the dog this morning (damn those habits!), so we couldn’t bring Higgins in for surgery today. Oh, and when I came downstairs, Burke had just set down a full bowl of kibble as well. (Seriously? Since when do the kids feed the dog in the morning?? sheesh 😛 ) So…he’s now rescheduled for next Monday. I’m thinking I’ll put a little note on his food next Sunday 😉

I’m a little bummed because I was really hoping he’d settle down after being snipped. (Although, Mr. Trainer says that may not happen. ACK!)

We had an incident yesterday…Mike and the kids were fooling around (tickle torture) on the couch last night and apparently Higgins wanted to get in on it. He ended up bumping Burke’s cheek…and unfortunately, Higgins most likely had his mouth open because it looks like his teeth scraped Burke’s cheek. It does not look like a bite…and we were watching the whole thing; we are 100% sure that it was not malicious. Higgins just has no idea how strong he is and he wants to be a part of everything.

Even knowing all this – it’s still a little scary! And we’ve learned our lesson: no horseplay while Higgins is in the room. I’ve already talked with Mr. Trainer and he’s on board to help out with this type of behavior as well.

And the good news is that while Burke was a little shy right after, he seems to have no fear of Higgins now. (A healthy dose of caution, but he’s not afraid to be in the same room with him.)
