It Was Horrible

…because it was supposed to be! 🙂

Our town had its annual Horribles Parade yesterday. Apparently, they’ve had over 40 of them…I find that pretty cool, and it makes me love our new town that much more.

Anyway…we all lined up behind the fire truck. And when I say “we all” I mean, pretty much all of the kids and their parents in the town!! Or at least, it seemed like it.

All of the kids (and some adults) dressed up to march from the fire house to the high school (about 1/2 mile maybe?). There were a *lot* of really cool costumes.

As you can see, since pretty much everyone was in the parade, there were not a lot of spectators. I think I saw a total of 10 people watching…

Maggie insisted on walking down the yellow line. And she walked with her skirt in her hand – very princess-like.

Logan didn’t have a nap at all yesterday, but was – again – a very good little guy. He was just taking in the sights along the way.

When we reached the high school, we asked the fire men if it would be okay to take a picture of Burke in front of the fire truck.

Oh, and before we left for the parade, I just couldn’t resist this shot…

Twins, Twins, Everywhere

My mention of the twin mommy one street over got a few “wow” comments – I’m guessing from non-Massachusetts people. 🙂

I think I’ve gotten over the “wow” factor for a few reasons…before I moved to my current town, I lived on a street where there was another twin mommy two doors down. She’s the one who actually introduced me to the twin club I’m in now. (THANK YOU JOHANNA!!) Her boy/girl twins are about a year older than mine, and we had a good time being down the street. Sad to say that we BOTH moved away from there right around the time play dates would have been really fun for us all. Ah well.

In my new town, we see double strollers all the time. I run into other twin mommies (some I know, some I just stalk) at the grocery store, at school, at Burke’s speech class, walking down the street. In my club, there are 3 twin moms who live within 3 blocks of me – and that doesn’t include the one we saw walking the other day!

The other reason is – and I know I’ve mentioned this before – I’m the Membership Chair for my twin club. Our club services the Greater Boston area and has more than 250 members. Yes: *250* members. The wow factor for me is that our club is not the only one in the area, and I’m pretty sure it’s not the largest!

Now – don’t get me wrong…just because the “wow” factor isn’t as it was for me, does not mean that I’m not super excited to stalk meet new twin moms and know that they live just around the corner. I love knowing that there are so many out there who just “get it” – I’m a firm believer that you can always learn something new from anyone and everyone. I’m also a firm believer in passing along information that may have helped me when I went through the same thing – usually only when I’m asked though 😉

The thing that DOES wow me? 50 sets of twins in one place. Yup: *50!* My twins club had a Halloween party yesterday and the kids had a lot of fun. I got some “crowd shots” – but they totally don’t do justice to the situation, so I’m not even going to bother posting them. My kids were *ahem* angels, of course.

Maggie wouldn’t get out of the bouncy house.

Burke fell in love with the police car Cozy Coup (even though we have a red one at home).

And he wouldn’t let anyone else use it. Well…he got really upset when we, ah, requested that he let someone else. (It did kind of match his outfit…)

We were able to distract him with the Bouncy House though.

There was a parade at the very end, but our kids created their own when we first got there.

There was a kids’ music band that played for the second half of the party. Logan seemed to enjoy it. Or at least, he enjoyed his juice while watching…

It’s Not as Froufie as It Sounds

If you’ve been reading my blog for any amount of time at all now, you’ve seen me mention my nanny. Every time I say that, I feel like I should be looking down my nose, clenching my teeth (Thurston Howell the Third style) and pronouncing it “mmnahnny.” Nothing could be further from the truth. (Thank goodness!)

Since I work full-time (which wasn’t an option…both sanity-wise and budget-wise), we needed to think about daycare when my maternity leave ended with the twins. I went back and forth about whether I wanted to send them somewhere or if I should hire someone to come in. My main factors were: money, trustworthiness, and ease of getting/picking up the kids. Another factor was that I’m able to work from home 2 days a week, and I wanted to be able to see the kids on those days – but knew I wouldn’t get any work done without help.

I was scared to death about leaving them with someone who was all alone with them all day. There wouldn’t be any accountability, and they were only 4 months old at that point – so they wouldn’t be able to speak for themselves. On the other hand, the cost of sending *2* kids to daycare nearly floored me. Sure, there were a few places that offered 10% off a sibling. But 10% off extremely expensive is STILL extremely expensive. As froufie as it sounds, the nanny was actually the best option for us. It was less expensive, the kids would be home on the days I worked from home, and I wouldn’t have to worry about having them completely dressed and fed in addition to ME dressed and fed by the time I needed to be out the door.

We have actually been through quite a few nannies by now. I fired our first one for randomly not showing up and giving me lamo excuses. (I was soooo lucky that work is so flexible with me, otherwise I probably would have been fired at that time as well!) We hired two highly recommeded high school seniors for the summer while we looked for a new nanny…and found a *gem* – she was awesome. Unfortunately, after some time went by, the commute was killing her, so she needed to leave us. But she found 2 other people (friends of hers) for us to interview. She even trained her replacement by overlapping a weeks worth of time – splitting the pay! The replacement was with us for a while, but ended up having to go to school full-time, so she knew of a friend looking for work. The friend was great, but knew it was temporary because we were moving. She stayed with us – even through the move – until yet another friend started working for us. This is Brenda. Brenda started with us about 2 weeks before Logan was born. (Ya, that wasn’t stressful at all! LOL)

Brenda is like family. She truly loves all 3 kids and even calls sometimes when she gets home to see how they’re doing if they’ve been sick during the day. She’ll bring them presents or treats – just because. (She brought cookies today – and even I got one! LOL) She keeps the kids in line, so they don’t walk all over her, but she also has a lot of fun with them. I hear *lots* of laughing when I’m upstairs working. Sure, I hear crying and screeching sometimes (usually Burke…never Brenda 😉 ) It takes *everything* in me not to rush downstairs at these points to see what’s going on – but that would undermine Brenda and I’m not going to do that. She’ll fill me in later, or call me if she needs me (which is usually never). And if I’m downstairs and one of the kids asks for something to eat, or to watch TV, or to go outside, my answer is always “Ask Brenda – Brenda’s in charge right now.” because only she knows how much they’ve already had to eat (and how good it was for them), or how much TV they’ve already had, or if she feels like going outside. I know that she appreciates this – she’s told me as much – and I think it helps the kids to know that I’m not going to give in to something they want if/when Brenda’s already said no.

Do I sometimes wish that the kids had gone to daycare? Every once in a great while I wonder if they were stimulated enough at home…but because they had each other, the socialization was pretty much built in. And all of our nannies spoke Spanish with them, so there was that (which I think is AWESOME. Maggie can speak in sentences with Brenda right now. And all 3 kids totally understand everything Brenda says to them in Spanish.) And now that the twins are in preschool, I don’t worry about that part.

We did the right thing. 🙂

Bad Haiku Yuktoberfest

Laura at Catholic Teacher Musings hosts a Bad Haiku every Friday, but this Friday is Yuktoberfest, so how could I resist? (just keep in mind that it’s SUPPOSED to be bad…even though I couldn’t really make it good if I tried.)

To entertain you:
Halloween, Zimmer Zoo style
in bad Haiku form

Scarier than ghosts,
Crazier than five goblins,
I have three children.

We tried for a theme:
a cheerleader, a football,
a football player.

We thought it’d be great
(It’s much harder than you’d think)
They have their own minds.

Of all the costumes
my little girl can think of,
Maggie’s a princess.

We searched through the store,
Daddy saw it before son,
Burke’s a Fire Man

It wasn’t his choice;
Because it’s Mom’s favorite,
Logan’s a Tiger

Awesome Visit

My mom flew up from Florida and hung out with us for the entire weekend. As most Grannies do, she came bearing gifts…that have been played and played and played with. I think Burke’s new book has already been read about 20 times…probably more!

Granny Frani showed up at our doorstep Friday afternoon and played with the kids all evening. Aunt Cathy came over too, as Granny Frani was actually staying with her. They both left after a chicken and broccoli braid meal (Love Pampered Chef!), but came back on Saturday with a yummy lunch! We spent much of Saturday afternoon in the back yard at the swing set. Did I get any pictures? nope.

Ordered dinner from one of our favorite pizza joints and then said goodnight to Aunt Cathy and Granny Frani again.

On Sunday, Granny Franni came back to go to church with us. We’ve been attending this church since January and *love* the people there. Jury’s still out on the minister, but he’s slowly growing on us. SLOWLY. Anyway – more people nodded in recognition to my mom saying “I’m Maggie’s Grandma” than to “I’m Nancy’s Mom.” Go figure 😉 I guess that’s to be expected after getting a hand-written note from one of the elders letting us know that they missed us and our red-heads. LOL (We missed two weeks in a row due to our anniversary and then the entire family being ill.)

I FINALLY remembered to take some pictures on Sunday.

The twins loved playing with Granny Frani and had an absolute blast with the stickers.

Mo-om! Granny Frani Put Stickers on Me!

A crock pot meal, and Granny was off to Aunt Cathy’s house and had to leave early Monday morning.

Burke’s first words when he woke up on Monday? “It’s morning time. Where’s Granny Frani??”

…apparently he had a good time 🙂

Various Happenings

Got Milk?

Maggie and I are the perfect pair for cereal. I’ll have a bowl of Cheerios and she’ll stand next to me, waiting (semi) patiently until I’m finished knowing that I won’t drink the milk when I’m done and she can have it – and glory of all glories, she can use the spoon to lap the sugary stuff up. The other day, right as she was diving in she declared, “I LO-OOVE milk!”

When Did I Become Mom?

I know when I became a mommy – but for the past two weeks or so, Burke’s been calling me “Mom.” And shortly thereafter, daddy became “Dad.” I knew this would happen, but I really wasn’t prepared for it so soon!

********

I Can Do That

True to being a little brother, Logan wants to do everything the twins do. Lately, he’s been able to climb in and out of his rocking chair – just like the big kids.

My Rear View Mirror

Hoo Boy. It’s been a while. Sorry!

Perfect Anniversary Date: Jon, you’d think that would have been taken when the Indian’s were winning, but it was such a great game, Mike had a good time even when the Sox were up

Interrupted Sleep: It’s so good to know that I’m not the only one! I mean, I figured – but it’s nice to verify that. Ooooh Rhonda! That’s great news – even if it isn’t true, I’m holding on to the idea that I’m preventing future night wake-ups 🙂 ♦ Silver, I’ve thought about getting a video monitor, but in the case of the twins, I’d still need to go in to put them into their beds, so I’d still be waking them up. And YIKES, sorry that yours are such light sleepers. Do they sleep with a noise maker on?

Dear Mass(hole) Drivers: Ooh, Jon – good point. I had forgotten that one. ♦ Gio – you might be right about point of view, and where the drivers come from. I grew up in VT, but I did live in NJ for a while. I still think MA is worse… ♦ Jim, I hadn’t thought about overseas drivers. I have to say, Ireland was scary for the crazy fast drivers on skinny little roads a cow could barely fit down, let alone two cars. And Germans – oy. One word: Autobahn. eek. Brazilians know the exact dimensions of their cars and squeak into the tiniest little spots. While driving. AACCK!

Sandwiches: Who knew this would be a hot topic – people sure are passionate about their food. Jon, I can’t believe I forgot about PB&H! And holy sweet – you mix fluff and honey?? And you’ve never had a roast beef and bacon sandwich? How long have we known each other?? LOL! ♦ Goddess – woah, PB&J*&*B? NICE. I may have to try that (with raspberry though 😉 ) ♦ Never got into the Gyro, Laura. Sorry… ♦ Cheryl, your kids just seem so…sophisticated. 🙂 Smoked Gouda slices on whole wheat. heh ♦ Grilled PB&J. Hmm. I’ve never tried that before, Heather. Interesting! Might have to give that a whirl. ♦ Gio, I’ve heard good things about Nutella, but I haven’t had that either. ♦ Missy – yup, fluff is that marshmallow gooey stuff. It’s good in hot chocolate – much better than regular marshmallows 🙂 ♦ Leave it to my brother to gross me out. Jim, PB&Pickles?? Blech. And to crack me up…sophisticated, huh? 😉 ♦ What a Card. Grilled cheese and jelly, huh? I have to admit my first thought was BLECH! Cuz I was picturing that yellow American cheese stuff…but with a good cheddar, that’s probably pretty good. And sorry that your soybean butter is so costly – but at least your kids get a mock PB&J, right?

Last 15 songs: LOL thanks for singing to me Laura 🙂 ♦ And for some reason, Grannyfrani, I knew you’d like my list. I also knew that growing up in a household that had music humming from James Galway to Simon and Garfunkel to Anne Murray to classical to the Smothers Brothers and Tom Lehrer (all of which are on my iPod – well, except Anne…) would lead to a deep appreciation of all music.

Home Sick

Today is the first day ever that my kids have missed school. Of course, they’ve only been in school for a few weeks now, but that’s beside the point. They’ll never have another first missed day!

The poor kids have had fevers and snuffly, runny noses. At one point last night, Mike thought Burke might have the chicken pox, but thank goodness – that doesn’t seem to be the case. (Just skeeter bites.)

Here’s to hoping they’ll feel better by Wednesday so we don’t miss any more school.

Interrupted Sleep

Before I go to bed each night, I go in to check on the kids one last time. This is when I get my sleepy hug, so that’s good…but it’s also when I move the twins from the floor or rocking chair – or wherever they’ve decided to land for the night – so it ah, kind of wakes them up a bit. And sometimes when I go into Logan’s room, he stirs just a bit as well (Darn those squeaky floors!) …none of them actually wake up fully, but they definitely experience some bothersome sleep disruption.

Is this a bad thing?? I mean, that whole uninterrupted sleep and all. I know as parents we don’t have this pleasure…but as kids? Shouldn’t they be getting uninterrupted sleep? I guess it’s a moot point since I’m obviously not going to stop going in there…

Slippers!

Since Maggie landed in the ER last year, we’ve been pretty good about putting slippers on the twins when they aren’t barefoot. The “free” slippers I ordered for the kids came in yesterday. The reason they were free was because I got a $50 L.L. Bean gift card from Pampers cuz we buy so many diapers. (Gifts to Grow paid off here…gonna buy ’em any way, might as well use the reward program.) The slippers ended up being $49.50 ($16.50 each), so I even have $.50 left over LOL. I did a quick search online for a coupon and came up with a code for free shipping. SCORE! Always look for a coupon before purchasing anything online!!

What are they sitting on you ask?

Daddy! Of course.

And I’ll throw one in just because…

What’s in a Name?

I realized that I don’t have a post for the kids to know why we named them what we did…so I figured I’d fix that. I’d love to say we have this whole drawn out story, but as usual – decision making with Mike is super easy – we seem to be on the same page for a lot of things…especially the important stuff, so the story is pretty simple.

We’ll go in order of age. (Sorry, Burke, Maggie’s got you beat by 30 seconds…)

Maggie: You were named after my grandmother (1st name) and Mike’s mom (middle name).

Burke: Your first name is Mike’s grandmother’s maiden name. It also happens to be the middle name of Mike’s dad, his aunt, and his uncle. Your middle name is the same middle name as my grandfather (although, he went by it because he didn’t like his first name), my dad, and my brother.

Logan: We just liked the name Logan 🙂 Your middle name, though, is Mike’s dad’s name.

On a related note, Maggie – if you were a boy, you would be Jake (Jacob Peter). Logan – if you were a girl, you would be Zoe May. Burke – we knew from the get-go that you were a boy, so you’ve always been Burke.

Those Darn Monkeys: Laura – I think Monster spray may be good for the MOMMY environment 😉 ♦ Silver – If I remember correctly, lavender is one of the ingredients in Paula’s essential oil “recipe” … mmmm, LOVE lavender 🙂

Copycat: Wow, Goddess…you ARE out of the loop 😉 I believe Scrubs was “ended” on NBC, but picked up elsewhere. And I’m pretty sure that JD and Carla will be leaving after this season, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the show will be ending…although, I’m not sure how much of a show it will be without them. ♦ WAC – Thanks for the Firefly discs. Seeing as how our TV tastes are fairly similar, I’m kinda excited about it. Although, you’re trying to get me hooked on a series that has already been canceled, so I’m just setting myself up for heartbreak. ♦ Gio – We just can’t watch TV together 😉 ♦ Jon – I totally should have known you’d have some great insight!! Thanks 🙂

WBW: Hi Missy – yup, Maggie’s totally asleep in all three pics. Crazy girl 🙂 ♦ Heather, did you get a picture of Bee with her head on the bed? That would be so cute! ♦ Laura – Oh, I’m showing it to all of her boyfriends…never mind her husband! LOL
