Fishful Thinking: Social Responsibility

This month’s Fishful Thinking newsletter is about Socializing Our Children to Social Responsibility.

It was timely because a few weeks ago I was trying to figure out how to get my kids more involved in community service around town. (I actually found a really great website for service ideas for kids!) The kids help me out every now and again when I put together a meal for a mom with a new baby and things like that, and we do a few things through church (I’m pretty sure that Feed to Read will be happening this summer), but I’m not sure that the kids really GET it yet. And some of those are on such a broad scale (rather than within our small community), that it’s really hard to understand how they are actually helping.

I also just learned that our town’s women’s group (that I’m a part of) is going to be pairing up with classes in the fall to help with community service ideas and to help teach kids to incorporate community service in every day life (I’m SO EXCITED for that!!)

What I like about Dr. Reivich’s newsletter this month is that she starts with YOU – the adult – and makes you look at what YOU do for community service. If you want to teach your children about community service, it’s important that they have a role model … and even more important that it’s you.

She asks that you “…Think about your own experiences with social responsibility” and asks the following questions:

  • What did you care deeply about as a child? How did it affect your behavior?
  • What social issues do you most care about now? How do these issues relate to your values?
  • How do you contribute to bettering the world and helping others?
  • How do you teach social responsibility to your children?

Then she gives tips for developing socially responsible children:

  • Brainstorm ideas that connect with your children’s interests
  • Let your kids be in charge
  • Join forces
  • Manage expectations
  • Practice what you preach

Of course, she goes into each point more in the newsletter – so it’s worth going over to check it out.

Are your kids involved in community service? And if so, what do they do? I’m always looking for ideas for how to get my kids involved.

Heaven

There’s a graveyard on the way to Burke and Maggie’s school, so we’ve talked about it a few times when we’ve gone by. I put it in terms of “That’s where people are buried when they die. The headstones help people find the person they want to visit because sometimes it’s nice to be able to go and talk – even if they can’t talk back.”

We’ve also talked about Heaven (MAN is that a hard concept!!) and what it might be like in Heaven and how we have relatives there and that’s where we’ll go when we die.

The other day as we were going by the graveyard, Maggie pipes up with her knowledge, “That’s the graveyard – it’s where people go when they die.”

After a few pondering moments, Burke asked, “Is THAT Heaven then?”

Makes My Monday: Father’s Day Fishing Trip

Our church sponsors a Father/Son fishing trip every Father’s Day. Burke and Mike went last year, but they didn’t get any pictures. This year, one of the guys actually brought a camera…and good thing, because Burke caught a fish!!

Happy Father’s Day!

We hit The Bison County Grill for lunch today…One of Mike’s favorite places to eat 🙂

Some Day Her Prince Will Come…

Wow. What Happened??

So…apparently when you miss that first post it IS a down-hill slide from there. Dang. I’ve been having a terrible time remembering to post lately 😦

A few minor, completely unrelated updates:

Burke and Maggie have 1.5 more days of Kindergarten left and then I’ll have 2 FIRST graders in my house!! It hardly seems possible.

Logan had another Dr. Endo appointment. Since January, he’s gone up 2% in height and 10% in weight. Not quite what they’re looking for. . . I had to gently break it to Nanny C. that she had to stop treating Logan to McDonalds, Burger King, and Dunkin Donuts each week. Yikes!

I’m not sure if I ever mentioned that I will not be the president for my town’s mom’s club. I just couldn’t do it. I did, however, find myself agreeing to be a co-leader for Burke’s Cub Scout troop  next year. And I’m not sure, but it really looks like I may have just been roped into singing with the church singing group, Joyful Noise (or JoyNoi as they call themselves). We’ll see about that one…I haven’t sung in public for a long, long time.

My Aunt (my mom’s sister) passed away on Sunday. She was only 61. It was not unexpected, but still a bit surprising. I say “not unexpected” because she had been suffering from early onset Alzheimer’s for the past 10 years.

One month until my Sister gets married!! (Crap. I still need to find a dress…)

Purple Hair

A few of the ladies in our town held a fundraiser for Relay for Life. They charged a few bucks (or more…) to put in purple hair extensions.

I like it because it’s not IN YOUR FACE…it just peeks out every now and again 🙂

The New Dog Kennel

Mike put together the new dog kennel today! It’s 5X10X6 and came with a sun shade.

It is essential to learn more about therapy dogs if you own a service animal.

This isn’t for him to be in whenever he’s outside…no, he’ll still have run of the entire back yard for most of the time. This is for if we have to run inside for a little bit and the kids are still outside (NOT good to leve kids and dogs alone!), or if the kids want to play baseball or soccer or some other sport that revs Higgins up too much. When you need emotional support animal physician letter services, visit onlinedogtor.com for more details.

This way, we don’t have to haul him inside each time 🙂 Whenever your dog or other pets urinate at your house you can easily remove the stain and odor by visiting OdorKlenz urine odor removal and using their products.

He doesn’t love it…but he doesn’t hate it either…so that’s good!

Soccer Patches

Burke and Maggie received their soccer participation patches today. They don’t hand out trophies and since they’re technically not supposed to keep score, they don’t do top teams or anything either.

This was the first week that Burke’s team lost…he didn’t take it well. We’re gonna have to work on that whole ‘losing gracefully’ thing…
