Struggling No More

If you remember a few weeks ago, I wrote about my spiritual struggle. Well … I’m no longer struggling. We took the advice of pretty much everyone and tried out a new church on Sunday.

Wow.

All I can say is that the buzzing atmosphere alone when we first walked in was completely different than “our” church. And the kids! There were kids everywhere!! At our church, I could probably count the number of kids on two hands. There were too many to count at this new church. And there’s a PreK Sunday School class. With three teachers. The only option at our church is the nursery.

The minister is a young guy (with a Southern accent heh) who has a lot of energy and seemed to be fairly upbeat. His sermon was short and to the point. The hymns were upbeat. The woman sitting next to us kept looking over at us with the three kids (who stayed upstairs for the entire service) and smiling. She was super nice and chatted with us afterward about how things work and some opportunities and things.

The second-in-command minister (I have no idea what her actual title is) recognized us as new people and came over after the service to chat and give us a tour! She brought us down to the nursery and to see the PreK room and to meet all of the teachers. They have a (paid) dedicated woman in the nursery and then members rotate through the Sundays to help out…there is never just one adult with any of the kids at any time. Same with all of the Sunday school classes.

They have a whole system for dropping off and picking up kids, and they keep the kids – both in the nursery and in Sunday school – THROUGH coffee hour!! Mike and I can hold adult conversations without interruption! Holy cow.

I didn’t really realize how uptight I was about the whole thing until the peaceful, relaxing feeling came over me when we got home that afternoon. It’s amazing what you realize after the fact.

The clincher for me though, is that this church says “trespasses” during the Lord’s Prayer instead of “debts” LOL Since I grew up with the “trespasses” version, my brain freezes a bit when we hit the “debts” part at our church.

…Or should I say, our old church.

More Computer Woes

It seems to be never ending. After having my computer fixed by IT two weeks ago, last week, the following keys were not working on my keyboard: Z X C M , . <Enter>. Makes for a fun time typing. I did a lot of copy/paste when I needed a letter! LOL Luckily, my IT guy was able to replace the keyboard within a few days.

Last night, my computer seems to have gotten a virus. SOMEHOW*, the “software” Antivirus 2009 was downloaded … this is not real software – it’s a virus. I’m still trying to figure out how to completely remove it. There’s also a “Bratsk.exe” file (or maybe more than one) that my virus detection software can’t remove. Any tips out there?

*I’m fairly certain that no one should search for “Chuck season 2 episode 1” …

It’s Not Wednesday!

Oops…so I’ve apparently lost track of what day it is…that other post will be back tomorrow *blush*

Wanna Support My Kids’ School?

Our kids’ school is participating in the Campbell’s Labels for Education program. The program gives schools free educational equipment in exchange for labels from the Campbell’s family of brands: Campbell’s, Franco American, Prego, V8 (need the caps for these), Market Day, Swanson, Pepperidge farm.

If you’re already eating these products (and not using them for your school) and find it easy to clip the UPC’s to send to us (or just save ’em for us to grab if we’re visiting) – we’d love it!

(The school is also doing a Calendar raffle – a prize worth around $50 is awarded to someone each day of November. If you wanna buy a $5 ticket from Burke or Maggie let me know 😉 )

I know. I’m shameless. I can’t help it *blush*

You Know It’s One Of Those Days When…

…half way through it you realize you’ve had your underwear on inside out the whole time. *sigh*

Anyway…I’m in NO WAY a political person, but this was forwarded to me in an email and I laughed, so I thought I’d share.

Post Turtle

Suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas  rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor  struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to  Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President.

The old rancher said, ‘Well, ya  know, Palin is a post turtle.’

Not being familiar with the  term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was.

The old rancher said, ‘When  you’re driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that’s a post turtle.’

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor’s face, so he continued to explain. ‘You know she didn’t get up there by herself, she doesn’t belong up there, she doesn’t know what to do while she is up there, and you just wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.’

My Favorite Teacher

Laura at Catholic Teacher Musings has asked that we honor our favorite teacher today.

I was going to be all cheesy and say that my High School Band teacher was the one who changed my life, but she also happens to be my Step-mom – so that just seems wrong 😉  (She still kicks butt though – and I’m still tickled that she’s the one who suspended my brother for throwing a smoke bomb during marching practice…before she and my dad started dating. hehehehe)

ANYWAY…this one is for a college professor I had at Clarkson University. Thank you Dr. Karis for believing in me. I started at Clarkson as an engineer…and after struggling for two years (and being accused of cheating on a test when I hadn’t – perhaps that’s another post), I HATED it. I loved the school, however, and didn’t want to leave. So I slogged around looking for some place to fit in. I found Dr. Karis. He believed in me and gave me a fresh start in Technical Communication. By the time I was a senior, I had keys to the lab so I could come and go as I pleased and use all of the equipment when I wanted to. He noticed that a class-mate, Shannon, and I were in the lab so much that he bought beanbags for us … in case we wanted to sleep there LOL! (Ah, Shannon. We had so many classes together! Another professor asked us to be TAs … she was a far better TA than I was.)

Right before we graduated, the director of the Professional and Technical Communication department over at the New Jersey Institute of Technology contacted Dr. Karis asking him if he knew of anyone who would be interested in getting a masters degree with them. Dr. Karis immediately told her of me, and how I’d be perfect to go there. (I actually said “No way! I’m DONE with school!” at the time, but eventually ended up going.)

So – Thank you Dr. Karis. You changed my life and I’m forever grateful.

**** UPDATE! **** I just got an email from Dr. Karis!! He read my post! heh 🙂

Congrats!

Congratulations to another twin mommy blogger! Mommy, esq. had her twins on Monday!! Head over there to check out the beautiful picture of mommy and babies. 🙂

No Pizza Today!

Well, actually – we ARE having pizza for dinner. Hmm…now there’s something to think about. (Subliminal thoughts for another post, I guess.)

I pulled into the driveway and there was Baby Bunny munching away on the carrots we left out! Yeah! (I did drive by the flat critter very slowly on my way home and still couldn’t tell if it was “BB” or not) I was so relieved to see him when I pulled in 🙂

Nancy’s Random Tips

These thoughts/tips jumble around in my head, so I figured I’d write ’em all down. I have no idea where most of them came from, why I have them in my head, or anything like that – I just know that they work 🙂

Laundry

  • To get ink out of clothing, spray the area with hairspray and then run through the wash.
  • If you have a super sensitive skin person in your family, and the “free” detergents aren’t truly cutting it, try putting the laundry through a second rinse as well.

“Beauty”

(Those of you who know me can stop laughing now… 😛 )

  • If you use conditioner on your hair, don’t put it on the top of your head, just on the hair that is “loose” – if you start by your ears and work down, that works well. Why? Because the hair that’s ON your head (as apposed to around it) is oily enough and doesn’t need to be weighed down by the conditioner.
  • To keep blemishes to a minimum, immediately after your hot shower, splash cold/cool water on your face. I started doing this waaaaay back when because I like really hot showers and the cold water would cool me off. Years later I was at a spa talking with the woman about face care and the like, and she said that this is most likely the reason my skin is fairly clear. Apparently, the hot water opens your pours to wash the dirt out, and rinsing in cool water closes them back up so the dirt can’t get back in.
  • If you apply things to your face with a cotton ball, STOP! Cotton balls absorb whatever it is you’re trying to apply. Use one of those round beauty-type pads instead as this just brings the lotion/facial cleanser/etc to your face rather than suck it up.
