I love Carolyn Hax and glad she answered this question. To be honest, though, I didn’t know what it was really like to be busy with kids until I had them.
I love this! Thanks for sharing. I hope I did the meme correctly. That is the first one I’ve done!
Any one who has not had kids — or at least looked after a kid or kids for more than a day — doesn’t understand. When I had fairly independent kids (age 10-18) in the house, it always took me at least half an hour longer to get ready to leave in the morning — and they did everything themselves!
Have embarrassingly never read Ms. Hax before but she now has a HUGE fan in me! Seriously, I worked a career that was VERY high stress, occasionally requiring upwards of 60+ hours a week with tight deadlines, frequently whiny clients and a mandatory need for a calm facade.
IT WAS CHILD’S PLAY COMPARED TO PARENTING. Despite what my former clients (the childless ones) might say, the import of what we did was silly by comparison. There is NO rest, no break in parenting. It’s 24/7, for life. However, the sense of accomplishment, challenge and value is unparalleled. Just this past weekend, we had a “reunion” of my former co-workers and I was asked, “Don’t you miss it sometimes?” My honest, honest answer, no. The people, yes. The work pales.
What an insenstive “friend” this letter writer is. She seems sadly reflective of what a self-revolving society we’ve become…friendship is two way, and empathetic. Even worse, that she seems to feel in the “right.” Wow is right.
Off soapbox! (I must’ve needed that!) π
I wonder how old she is. This sounds like a very immature person. (I love Carolyn Hax..she is always the voice of reason. No nonense.)
Oh Amen!
I couldn’t have said it better myself. I don’t know the columnist, but I’d like to shake her hand.
And whoever the person is who asked the question, well…I’d like to give them a piece of my mind. And maybe the finger too.
When I first saw this article, I emailed to my best friend. I had to thank her for being such a great friend. She doesn’t have any children, but she has spent plenty of time with the twins.
OMGosh! I can’t imagine having a “friend” like that! See, that’s why i barely have any friends that don’t have kids!!!
ps thank you so very much for your comment today. I needed the support and you were there π
Love the response! I am like some of the others I had NO idea that I would be quite this busy. I thought I was busy before kids, little did I know! π
Ooh, that’s a good one. Yeah, people without kids (and who spend no time whatsoever with any children and are generally un-empathetic and big jerks) just don’t get what a day with them is like. Every day, the same exhausting Groundhog day. I mean, it’s awesome and fun a lot of the time. But damn, it’s exhausting.
This is actually funny!! Some people are so self absorbed it’s astounding!! What a moron! LOL……You’re never as busy, until you’ve had kids!!
