My Back Seat Driver

I have a little fellow in the back of my minivan who now understands what a red light means, what a green light means, and when I’m supposed to stop before hitting something. It’s actually quite cute.

Whenever I drive somewhere and Burke is in the car, he’s always on the lookout for something I may have missed. “Red light, Mommy!” “…Stop!”  (Apparently he thinks I should stop before I do…) He (semi) patiently waits for the green light and lets me know when it turns. “Green light, Mommy!” He follows the path of the road, “Turn, Mommy!” (for bends in the road) or “Uuuuup” (for a hill) and “Dooooown” (for the other side of the hill). And he knows which way I’m supposed to go, “Turn now, Mommy! That’s our house!”And “STOP! Don’t hit the car!” Or house, or fence, or whatever else is in front of me when I’m parking. (I’m sure this is all making me sound like a bad driver, but I’m really not… LOL)

What he hasn’t quite picked up yet is that I can’t just “Go Fast!” when he wants me to. There are a lot of “Burke, I can’t go faster than the car in front of me.” said on any given trip. But I have to admit, I’m usually smiling.

  1. Lol, getting him ready for his driving test already then? 😛
    Thanks for your comment. 🙂

  2. Burke sounds a lot like your brother did at his age. I remember well his urgent “Stop, Mommy, stop!” and also his “zoom” (meaning ‘go faster’) when I couldn’t and saying similar things to your oft repeated phrase. Just wait until he understands about spped limit signs!!

  3. But Burke has a cool name so he can do whatever he wants.

  4. Funny!! It took mine forever to understand that I can’t put the pedal to the metal the instant the light turns green, if the car in front of me isn’t going yet.
