There was an article I read about a city trying to ban plastic bags from grocery stores. I totally get the whole pollute the environment thing…and I hate seeing the “bag birds” along the side of the road, or stuck in trees. But, uh, HELLO?! Because people can’t hold on to their trash – EVERYONE is punished? (I hate that.)
The reason I shake my head at this is because we REUSE those bags. Novel concept, huh? When we clean out the litter box, plastic bags are used (and by we, I mean Mike). Or when I’m going to be out-and-about and know that diapers are going to be changed, plastic bags join us on our adventure. Or if I have a quick crafting project that I want to take on the run and can’t find any of my millions of non-plastic bags that I bought specifically for this purpose, I grab a plastic bag. These grocery store bags fit perfectly in the smaller trash cans as liners…I’ve even seen a can designed specifically TO use with them.
So, seriously – ban plastic bags?? Please don’t make it so I have to purchase the small trash bags instead.

I agree completely and also reuse most plastic bags I get. I do have a pretty good sized collection though & should probably bring some back to the store for recycling there. And really, which is the lesser of two evils; plastic bags or killing trees for paper bags (and don’t tell me to get those canvas reusable bags either).
I use the reusable canvas bags and love them! I use bread bags for wet pants emergencies and cat poop scooping, but now that I bake my own bread, I will probably run out. My mom has generously offered to save her stash for me.
I hate plastic grocery bags, but I do see where you’re coming from. If everyone reused their bags, we wouldn’t have a problem. I wrote an article about this very subject not too long ago, and I’ve since purchased a dozen reusable bags from Wal-Mart. Here’s the link if you’re interested in reading it:
